Silicia Sand Tumbling?

Anyone ever tried sandblasting 40/20 Silicia-Slag Sand?

I have much availible to me since its run off and its just dumped. I dont have a tumbler as of yet still but Since it is used for pitting steel, stainless steel, aluminum and other metals I figure must also work in a tumbler

I would say waay too abrasive

Most tumbler media is for cleaning/polishing brass. The other medias (glass,slag,sand,etc) are abrasive and would act as sandpaper removing the metal and not just the dirt/carbon/oxidation.

That silica stuff is great for cleaning up old rusty equipment fast, but I wouldn't use it for brass.

hmm for funs sake Maybe I will try it with damaged brass to see what happens when I get around to it

perhaps a handful thrown in to freshen up an old walnut media?

Sounds like maybe you work with silica.
Breathing in silica fume is very hazardous make sure you tumble outdoors and away from any vents or openings.
It has been called the modern day asbestos.

its supposed to be more breath in friendly but I have my doubts lol we use 3 different kinds one looks like Crushed Glass , Another Like Beach sand the main one is a Black Manufactured stick sand

One thing ive thought of trying is uncooked Quinoa... Mostly just to get it out of the cupboard before my wife cooks with it.

It would be bad idea. You couldn't be sure that you got it all out of your brass and if you got any into your sizing die you would scratch it.

how about trying it in a wet tumbling media?

that would eliminate dust, improve the scratch issue as it would be lubricated... and can't be that much harder on brass then SS media

I know jackpine sand works well on old rusty tools in a cement mixer....

hmm never tried wet tumbling nor do I have one might ahve to take a look at one next time in AB
