Put it down to old age, and not being able to find any of my 'smithing books (put that down to old age too) - I have to remove the sights on my marlin 1895 and replace them with Fire Sights. When taking them off, IIRC, I go from right left and insert them from left to right. Is this correct?

Almost everything on a firearm is form left to right. Pins etc....

Yea, but which side is that?
Trev, can I borrow your adjustable dovetail cutter?

You were slack gettin' it back to me last time! But yeah. :)

Been trying out a new one that makes the sights bigger at both ends and the slot narrower in the middle. Ya have ta hold yer tongue just right and....well, you know how it goes... :)

Cheers

Pictures please if it's not giving up any trade secrets? Hell if it's giving up trade secrets then GIMME, GIMME!! ! ! ! :D

I'd think you want the one side straight to hold the sight perfectly aligned and the other slightly curved. For example a pivoted mount on a LOOOOONG radius that you clamp for one cut then pickup a couple of thou and then rotate it through the next cut to make the side closer to the pivot very slightly arc'ed.

How'd I do at guessing the secret?

Anyhow, thanx for the input. I was able to change the sights. Now, if this @#%$^#%#^$$!!!! winter would just slack off a bit, I can go out and try my toy!!!!!

Trev, I kinda figured the narrow end in first bit, but my old eyes just ain't good enough to see which end that is, and I didn't want to open the reloading cabinet just to get my caliper.. :)

Geez, if a fella only owns on caliper, it pretty much ought to sit on the kitchen counter with the rest of the everyday needs eh? :D

Only sorta joking, I figure I have about a half dozen or so digital calipers floating around, a couple dial calipers, and at least one actual vernier, and can usually put hands on one pretty quickly. If "old eyes" is a problem, Lee Valley will sell ya one with large print on it too.

Measuring is easy enough. So is wrecking something by rushing it. Might as well do it right slowly, as it's gonna take less time than redoing it, eh?

Cheers
Trev
