Silly question from newbie abot scopes

By 40mm, are you referring to the objective lens measurement?

Lots of scopes with 40mm objective lenses, but they're typically more geared to general purpose or hunting than they are high-precision target shooting, with maximum magnification in the 9x-12x range being pretty typical. That said, there are literally hundreds if not thousands of options in the world of Rifle scopes, so there probably exists something that'll do what you want it to...

Why the focus on 40mm? What is your end goal here?

I'm planning to find 22lr precision rifle and 50mm objective lense scope usually humongous for the small rifle

"Precision Rifle" means a lot of different things to different people. Are you looking to compete in anything? Do you know what ranges you want to use it at? Have you considered what ammo you plan to use? Have you considered how much magnification you want?

And of course, BUDGET. Hard to suggest anything without a budget.

There are lots of options with 40-42mm objective going up to 12 and even 16x magnification, higher magnification than that and you're mostly looking at older products, cheap products, or 50+mm stuff.

Don't concern yourself with the look, if by precision you mean precision rimfire shooting off barricades, pretty common to have a 50mm objective lens scope.

Here is a pic of my precision rimfire with a 56mm objective.

What distances do you want to shoot?

Have a NC Star 4x16x50 on my Ruger precision , doesn't look out of place at all ! Have Bushnell 6x18x50 Trophy's on my 10/22 target builds (x3) and the factory Target 10/22 that also look good ! So don't be held down by what you think might not look right !

Not sure about distance because I'm still looking for club, also I'm less concerned about the look and more about weight/balance

Not to compete, just put tight grouping. Ammo is important?
The budget is bit tight 400 - 500 dollars.
I'm not sure about magnification - Something " can-do-it- all".

Youll want something of atleast 12x or 16x. Check the cabella's brand scopes or a used vortex tactical.

Aim for a FFP and maybe do some more reading online first.
