Before you fire, disassemble totally and clean grease out completely. Make sure to take firing pin out of bolt and degrease it VERY well. Then reassemble, lube the carrier and fire away.

Yes, slam-fires can occur with the SKS.

You should take the precautions of: 1. ensuring that your ammunition is made to military specifications, and; 2. controlling your muzzle during loading (to ensure that any slam-fire will not go anywhere other than where you would choose to fire).

1) Don't over grease!
2) Ensure that the sear is safe by dry firing. Hold down the trigger with the rifle empty, the mag open & the bolt closed. Then while still holding down the trigger cycle the bolt. Then slowly release the trigger and listen for a click noise. Then pull the trigger again and see if it fire's.
3) Don't do a trigger job unless you are sure of your skills or a licensed gun smith.
4) Most serious slam fire issues were with a certain Norinco line of SKS's they are referred to the SKS Model D. This certain model "slam fire" actually was an out of battery accident that resulted in the loss of a life. Although this is extremely rare accidents do happen.
5) "Soft Primer's" aka civilian non-corrosive ammo can cause this issue also. As I had this happen to me at a gong shot competition last summer.

All in all these SKS's if properly up-kept will give use safe fun shooting for a long, long time to come.
