Simple check for barrel over/under indexing on Chinese M-14s.

If the front sight is obliviously canted left or right go to the second paragraph.

First, with the magazine out of the rifle place it on the edge of a table on the magazine well.
Place a straight edge on the flat behind the rear sight with the straight edge centered on the rear sight.
Place the second straight edge on the flat and centered behind the front sight.
Stand back a few feet or meters and see if the two straight edges are level to each other.
The tilt of the front straight edge will tell you if the barrel or front sight is over or under indexed.

Second, with the bolt lock in the open position look at the breech end of the barrel.
Note the two feed ramps used by each side of the magazine and the protrusion (peak) between them.
The peak should be at the bottom centre of the barrel and inline with the oblong protrusion in the magazine well for the barrel to be centered.

Others may have a better way of checking.

The two straight edges should work on M1 Garand's as well.
