i found a sorce for pure clean lead for 1$ a pound pure lead but dirty lead for 85cents a pound or lead wheel weight(only lead but still with the steel lip) for 40 cents a pound.. which would be better to buy .. o yea used for a 44 mag... thinking the wheel weights where there a tougher lead
 
Wheel weights. Depending on what you are shooting, you will want the harder WW alloy. I'd pay that price for wheel weights. Probably buy a couple hundred pounds at that rate.
 
the wheel weights are from a scrap metal dealer when i asked if they had any lead wheel weights thu told me they just removed a lot of there lead so they only had 500 pounds of lead left -_- asked me why i need it ....i had on a captin highliner hat i have a scroughy azz beard and wearing a flanel jacket ..told them i needed for counter weight in a fishing boat(there not allow to sell to the "public" but in some sercimstaces they will(cash only)
 
Get the WW, but if you can get some pure get some of that.
Make's good tradeing with a fellow shooter or a guy that cast's sinker's/lure's.
 
In mixed WW, 40% the weight is iron weights, zinc weights and clips usually.
that means that once smelted, your cost per pound with WW at the scrapyard is 1$ a pound.

Last batch I was lucky and got only 30% junk, but you never know.
I pay 15 cents a pound to garages for mixed WW, so I end up with ingots that cost me 30 cents a pound.
The metal yards buy it at 35 cents here (but you have to bring it there), and they sell for 60... at 60, I wouldn't buy there unless I am desesperate.

Try to call a few garages, offer them 20(13 cents a pound)$ a 5 gallon pail. Some will want 30(20 cents a pound). Then argue "ok if it's full". (there are 153 pounds in a 5 gallon pail)
One way or the other, you are not paying more than 20 cents a pound, which is quite good.
 
I doubt they hired a guy to sit there and sort the WW... really, have you ever sorted a 5 gallon of WW? It takes like an hour, I don't even do it anymore, I just throw a bunch of stuff over the fire and scoop anything that doesn't melt when lead has melted.
And on most zinc weights, you have no way to know they are zinc other than they float when the lead has melted.
50% of zn weights I can sort because they are bright and have ZN or Z on them, and 50% get in my mix and I scoop them out.


Clips weight alot. I bet you 20% of the weight at least is scrap.
Buy 100 pounds, smelt it, and weight the scrap...

I am always between 30-40%.

Just letting you know, do whatever you want and then report with the weights.
Unless the scrap guy had too much free time, I bet you it's bs and they didnt sort them. are you kidding me, imagine the tons of WW that they would have to sort 1 by 1 ?

The scrap yard's around here sort them.
 
buy the WW and smelt and then report the weight of scrap vs weight of lead.
I am between 30-40% on my last 4 batches.
