Simpliest US hunting license

Kombayotch has a nice sticky at the top of this form showing you how to fill out your Form 6. I've done it before with no issues. However, now that Alaska has raised the non-resident small game license to $60 (American, so what $90 Canadian), I'm looking for other options. I've already got burned a whopping $17 by North Dakota (all their licenses expire March 31), so I'm trying to avoid doing that again.

My question for you fine folk is: what is the cheapest, simplest US hunting license to pickup, just for the purposed of shooting matches State-side?
 
My understanding is with a match invite is you can only cross around the match date. I'm not sure how many events I'm going to make it to yet, which is why the hunting license is easier.
 
Ummm, maybe, maybe not... What my contacts in blue have indicated is INTENT.

Why are you crossing into my country with a gun? What do you have to prove this is why you are entering the country?

If you suggest you are going hunting but have no guiding hunt booked in your itinerary, you may just meet a bit of resistance to your entrance with a bang stick.

Many of us turn a trip to a match into a holiday. Have a list of hotels booked so you can clearly show where and why you are driving around their country with a toy. As long as the intent makes sense, you will likely be met with a big "good luck and have fun".

Now each crossing and even agent, will have their own set of "rules" but that is the theme that seems to work best for the crossing I have gone through whether by land or air.

If planning to go to a match with restricted toys, that might create another bundle of joy but on our side of the border. I don't travel with restricted stuff but would assume things will get pretty sticky if items are lost in a place that was not a direct route to your match????

If you get the latest version of ATF form6 Nia from the ATF webiste, you DO NOT require to have a hunting licence anymore to shoot matches in the US. The last few ones I have been filling out, I did not attach a hunting licence to it. I go quite regularly to shoot State side and had no problem getting across the border without a hunting licence to shoot a match.

THIS is solid intel. The BATFE removed the requirement for hunting license and match invitation several years ago. Simply put N/A in both boxes of the Form 6 where it asks for this info. As a Canadian citizen the requirements of the past no longer apply.

BATFE requirements for Canadian citizens are one thing, US CBP requirements are another.

I can’t speak for eastern states, but I can assure you that along the WA border, you will not be crossing by car with just a form 6nia, you will need an invite or match registration. It doesn’t need to be fancy or personalized, a simple email is sufficient as is a printout of a practiscore registration.

That is a correct. If you don't need a visa to enter to US you don't need an invite or a hunting liscence to enter the U.S with your firearms listed on your Form 6NIA

Things changed under the Bush Administration, then things changed again under the Obama Administration.

Does the prohibition on the receipt and possession of firearms and ammunition by aliens in nonimmigrant visa status apply to nonimmigrant aliens who lawfully enter the United States without a visa?

No. A nonimmigrant alien who is lawfully admitted to the United States without a visa (e.g. Visa Waiver Program), may acquire or possess a firearm in the United States.

If you're a non-immigrant alien admitted to the USA under a visa, you need to meet the exception on the general prohibition on the possession of firearms or ammunition. (Such as a match invitation or a valid hunting license issued by any state.) However, if you're Canadian, and you're a non-immigrant admitted to the USA under a visa waiver - rather than under a visa - that prohibition doesn't apply to you, so you don't need to meet an exception on the general prohibition on the possession of firearms or ammunition.
