SIMSON and MERKEL side by side shotguns are both made at SUHL in GDR.

They are so similar, so, I think just the name on the shotgun is different.

Yes, this is not news. Sauer is part of the group too. Simply put (it's actually more complicated) but the Coles Notes are after WWII, when the commie Russians took over East Germany, they just usurped these companies facilities and brand names and began pumping them all out of the same factory.

Nothing like the pre war guns.

It's pretty common for a maker to buy parts from a parts maker, assemble and finish the parts to produce a gun that is slightly different from other makers. English gun makers have done it for a long time and a lot of Spanish side by sides are the same inside with a different name on the outside. All of the cheap rifle scopes are built this way as well, parts and lenses are built by makers in the Pacific rim countries and assembled under various names. Also, Italian gun makers like Isadoro Rizzini have made guns under contract for various companies such as Savage as well as selling under his own name (FAIR) while Fausti has made guns for Weatherby as well as selling under their own name.

I have a Buhag which is close in design ( if not identical) to the Merkel. It was built in 1968 and is a 16 bore. Nice things about post war production are very modern steels and 2 3/4" chambers. These guns are available in Canada now for some very good prices considering the quality.

Fine pair of SxS Weimajack...
Yes, pre-war are the ones sought after, but the post war are nice too.
It becomes a matter of choice and availability.
I still have not pulled the triger on either one of those manufacturers because I have not had one in my hands to get the feel for.
