Since Canada Post is no longer reliably delivering packages...

My CP delivery guy is awesome. Last week I was stalking my package online knowing that I was getting it delivered that day. I left work and ripped right home to see him driving the other way down the road:( . I knew he had dropped off the slip so I just figured I'd hit up the CP counter after dinner. As I'm unlocking my front door I see his truck roll up to my driveway, he pops out carrying my package and says he figured it was me coming home took the slip gave me my new SR45 and all is well:dancingbanana:. It sucks that there are some dicks out there but they're not all bad.
 
The way I look at is that "it is just a parcel". If I were to call and get a ATT to bring it home from the post office, then I must also follow the appropriate transportation laws. So I get my ATT, then go to the post office, open the box, ensure that the firearm is unloaded, apply a trigger lock, put it in a case and lock it, turn around to go home, but there will most likely be a bunch of cops with their guns drawn and pointed at me. I don't think it is a good idea to open a parcel at the post office and pull out a firearm.

I have called the CFO about this a few times and I get different answers every time. Sometimes they say I need a ATT and some times they say I don't.

I know that firearms are supposed to be shipped unloaded and with trigger locks, but I have yet to get one in the mail that has any kind of locking device, much less a locked case. Every handgun I have got through the mail had a mag inserted, which is also against transportation laws.

My postman is kind enough to not even leave the attempted delivery card until the next day, usually half filled out with some grade 1 legible writting. However with the online notification, I usually call the post office to verify my package is there and pick it up before I even get the notification card from him. Sometimes he is nice enough to leave me someone elses mail and I get to finish his job, happened more than once.
 
Reading the previous posts, I must have one of the exceptions to the rule to just leave a card & run away. My post lady usually bring the mail around 1030 am every weekday. If there is a parcel with signature to accept she will bring it to the door & knock. If per chance there is no one home she will leave the card.

I have had good luck in the early am checking the tracking on line, too. It will usually say "out for delivery" on the day she brings it so I know to be home for her arrival.

Just lucky I guess.

I have a mailman for letters (they bid on their route) and another person that just does the parcel truck, which seems to be a different person all the time. Unless it's a small padded mailer, it comes off the parcel truck. Maybe things are different in each province... we are supposed to be losing 'door to door' in favour of community boxes, soon. This doesn't effect parcels with a Signature Required, they'll still be delivered to your door (or at least they will supposed to be).

If this thread is an indication, some do their job better than others.
 
Too be honest if by chance you get pulled over and admit you have a restricted firearm and no ATT, a dollar to donuts that the cop is dumb as sh*t when it comes to firearms laws and regulations anyway. For some reason they all seem quite misinformed about it. Just keep it in the shipping box until you get home and try not to break anymore laws than you might have already. I mean who really knows the answer anyway?
 
If you really want to mess with the CFO office ask them how to confirm that the firearm is being transported as per regulations without opening the package at the post office
 
My postal worker is great when it is him doing it, if he is on vacation them a toss up, so is my canpar guy, they know most of the heavy stuff is guns or ammo. I always thought the att I received with the transfer was good for pick up but will check when my sportowys show up, I will call.It is not hard anyway, I moved last year and just called them gave them a date and a 6 hour window and they said no prob! I don't think I would want to open a package containing a handgun at the local lawtons post office.I thought the package, usually well wrapped and taped all to hell was considered 1 lock and I put it in a locked container so that's 2,, bobsyouruncle!

Go ahead and open it at the post office. Just give the clerk infront of you a heads up so they don't hit the panic button, lol
I know a guy that does that every time they receive a restricted so that they can put a trigger lock on it and case it.
If they don't like it then give them the CFO's phone number and tell them to complain that someone was following the bull$hit laws they made.
 
Returning to the original question of the op: yes you need an ATT to transport from the postal office or postal counter to your home. I did call the CFO some time ago because I was expecting a non restricted via Canada Post, and that is what was answered to me. Getting an ATT is not much trouble in comparison to the trouble you risk (even remotely) to be in by breaking the law regarding restricted firearms. And I might add, if we want the rest of the world to treat us gun owners and sport shooters like responsible law abiding people, we should act like so.

I happen to live within eyesight of my super mail box and they make no attempt to deliver any packages. One postie I know said they fill out all the failure to deliver forms ahead of time and just put them in your mail box. This way they finish their route early and go home.

This is what happens here too. My wife saw the delivery person and asked if that was the current policy. (She wasn't trying to be nasty, just asking) We were told by the local drop off location that this is the local policy. The delivery person said "No, these are for when you aren't home." My wife said that we've gotten several of them when one or the other of us was home. Then the delivery person said "Well, you get a lot of packages." Great. Now they've associated our address/us with "getting a lot of packages" which equals a pain in the butt. I don't get it. Without packages and other special delivery items, much of what they deliver is junk mail. Packages and such are paying their salaries.

I always call the CFO for a TATT if my Restricted Firearm is at the post office waiting for pick-up.

Re the above ^^ I was told (very sternly) by a Gun Counter guy that it is against the law to open a "case" revealing a Restricted Firearm in public. Therefore, "one should never keep the registration papers locked inside with the firearm". I've never heard this before….but what do I know?

As i understand it, you are allowed to open the case at your residence and your destination (ie.range) if a cop pulls you over and asks to see your restricted you can either tell him to follow to your home or range, or you can have them fill out a form (number unknown) that allows them to have you open the case without you breaking a federal law.
If you have an statt to go from the post office to your home IMHO the post office is your starting point and you are responsible for making sure the firearm is transported according to the laws and to do so you would need to open it and put a lock on it before putting it in a case.
My last restricted was shipped with the red plastic piece in the chamber and a tiewrap on the case. No trigger lock. If they wanted to throw the book at you then that is not meeting the transport laws as i know them.

You do need a ATT to pick it at the post office.. As for opening your package at the post office... Don't... Just wait tell you get home.. Same as you would any package that you were picking up at the post office. All guns shipped CP are supposed to have a trigger lock.. I no some people don't put them. My M&P showed up with out 1.. That was a surprise!..

It's easy to get a ATT and you may even get it the same day..
 
Parcel delivery is contracted out where I live so no problems here with delivery to the door, if I do get a card it goes to a Drug Store for pick up, not the most secure arrangement. What if my wife gets home first and we have a parcel card and she picks it up, should I take it back to the drug store and apply for an ATT? This system is so stupid and flawed, so many things that don't make sense or really matter, as long as the firearm ends up at the rightful owners home who cares.
 
Just like a computer only being as good as the operator, i think each service is only as good as the individuals working for them.

I have had non restricted with sig required, left propped against my door for hours...twice by CP. Guy i know bought prohibs and restricted at the McSherry auction, and the courier did the same thing. He found them sitting on his front step.

Someone else posted about going to the outlet and needing to verify its the gun before taking it home with a ATT. I can see the swat take down now....well thought out gun laws...f:P:f:P:
