Actually I really like the GBL stainless, but ive been hearing how marlin makes theyre rifles these days. It would be nice if another manufacturer upped the ante and made some real competition for this rifle.

The 86 has a stronger action than the Marlin and the new Extra Light version is made in the Miroku factory, with excellent fit and finish.

This is exactly what i'm thinking. Hope those problems will be fixed very soon...
Marlin lever design are nice and can be matched with optics, especially with smaller caliber like .357 and .44. I think we can't fit a scope on a Rossi or Winchester... I might be wrong!?!

The new Winchesters are made by Miroku in Japan like the Brownings. Excellent quality but expensive. They also include some added safety stuff that most don't like. A tang safety and a rebounding hammer most noticeably.
Mossberg and Henry make hunting levers in a decent price range. The Italians make some pricey stuff as well. For medium game and fun it is hard to beat the Rossi 92 clones. Strong and priced ok they are often loaded heavy in 44 Mag and 45 Colt for serious hunting whack to 125-150 yards.
Hopefuly the drop in QC at Marlin will improve once the workforce is better trained at the new location. At least one could hope.
There were millions of these rifles made. The used supply will not dry up too soon. My 70's 444 is a fine rifle and prefered to a new one in my eyes even with the slow twist barrel.

Both Chiappa/Armi Sport and Pedersoli are now making 1886's.
I have one of the Chiappa's, and it is really nicely made, without the lawyer mandated tang safety and rebounding hammer that the new Winchesters have.
Prarie Gun Traders, one of our sponsors, lists them at $999.99, a fantastic price. (Doc Rowlands wants $1595 or something crazy like that)
The Pedersoli version is described by them as a 71/86, really a model 71 in 45-70, with a pistol grip and half mag. I don't know who other than Doc Rowlands is carrying them yet, but you can expect his prices to be higher than what others will be charging, once they get stock in.

Chances are you aren't willing to pay the price, that would be required to bring back a true model 1899 with the brass rotary magazine.
Check out every used Savage '99 you see at a gunshow. Many do have pristine bores.
I am fine with with the detachable magazine version. Also I do not see them costing more than 900 bucks. For me I would pick one up used
.Prices are all over the place. .300 Savage models in good shape are 300 bucks and .308/.30-30 ones are 600+
bucks.
They are nice rifles, I cant seem to find one in 45-70 though.....
I had a look at the chiappa's, they seem nice and I dont know much about them, they they are listed at about $1400. thats a few bucks more than a SBL or GBL! Also, on their website they show 45-70 ammo next to the rifle with pointed tips in their advertising. I though I had heard a while back that pointed tip ammo with lever actions was a no-no. Can someone verify? Sorry for the sidetrack.
Defenitly bring back the Savage 99 in some original calibers. .303 Savage was a good round in it's day and many would like to use it again. I would also be very interested in a Ruger lever too. They ahve been making some good guns lately.
