Has anyone else noticed the price of reloaded handgun ammo has been creeping up and now in most cases either matches or exceeds the price of factory ammo?

I saw "Western Munitions" 9mm reloaded ammo for sale for $75/250 today. I thought it was funny, because 4 days ago I bought 500 rounds of Federal 9mm in a brand new ammo can for exactly the same price ($150/500 with the ammo can included).

Even the "Combat Masters" ammo is getting up there, almost to the point where there's no sense in buying it. I think that stuff goes for $80/300 (or $135sh/500).

What's the point?

even if i bought once fired brass for every round i reloaded i would still only be at 16 cent a round, combat masters is 27

and that is using 147gr plated bullets, would be even cheaper if i shot 115 lead or something like that

I just don't shoot enough to justify the time/costs associated with reloading.

Combat masters/BDX is ~$270/1200 or about 22.5cents a round. Not bad in my books. I've ran 6-8k rounds of it through my shadow and never once had any isssue that was ammo related.

I remember getting 9mm reloads direct from wolf for 180/K. If you ordered 10k+ shipping was free! That was only in 09....

Now you can't order from wolf unless you are a re-seller(retailer)..... Btw we have SFRC to thank for that.... The one club I belong to orders 30k twice a year, wolf will no longer sell directly to the club. The club order is half group buy the other half is to feed the club rentals.

The cheapest I have been able to source (just last week) for an order was 260/k for 9mm shipped! Pretty sad when you can find 9mm commercial fmj ammo for 279(+shipping).

The funniest thing..... My cost to reload 9mm in 09 was $135/k it's now $115! The price of components has dropped a bit since the buying frenzy has abated south of the border......

My $.02
Cheers!

I really like the Combat Masters ammo in my Shadow as well. $270 for a 1200 round case is good until I add in shipping to the West Coast. I had a local dealer take a close look at stocking Combat Masters ammo until he crunched the numbers. Price would end up being too close to factory new so he figured it wouldn't sell.

You can still buy 30k directly from Wolf if you are is SK. We only deal with 5000 round and less orders for him.

I agree that the price differential between factory and re-loaded ammo is insufficient justification for the additional risks associated with the necessarily reduced quality control that re-loaders provide.

They have neither the equipment, staff, expertise, or consistency of materials to even approach the quality control provided by larger manufacturers. With an activity for which a breakdown in quality control can have lethal consequences, the risks are just too high to justify the declining amount that can be saved.

Having purchased a large number of rounds at a "less than factory" price from a re-loader, I have experienced failures such as split or buckled brass, reversed bullets, dud primers, misfires requiring the bullet to be forcibly removed from the barrel, failure to feed, failure to eject, length of cartridge above and below spec, and so on.

It just isn't worth it. I won't be doing that that again!

When you see a "re-loading company" offering 45ACP in LRN or SWC, you know they are scrapping the bottom of the barrel for components. Their primers are likely a crap-shoot.

No thanks - from now on, I'll stick with the military-industrial complex, instead of "buying local"!

Ryan, that comment was in no way a dig on you.... I enjoy spending $$ at your e-business! I just got shipping conformation on the NEA btw, it's supposed to arrive Wednesday! :D

The reason wolf will no longer fill our orders is that he has too much volume going to retailers (he actually said your business name when he told us). He doesn't have the capacity to meet our demands as well as yours, and I am sure others, as well.

Cheers!

When it comes to reloads, you should try buying directly from the reloader. BDX/Combat Masters cost me $190(tax included) for 900 rounds at the Calgary gunshow last year which is pretty reasonable, however if I go and buy BDX from one of the local ranges it costs way more(because they need to make money).

If I dont want to buy reloads, it is possible to find MFS for 200/k(plus tax) and good quality factory ammo for 270/k(plus tax) if you look for deals locally(because shipping ammo is what really kills you). 300/k(plus tax) is crazy high, I can get that kind of price at somewhere like wholesale where I dont even have to buy bulk.

ive gone through about 1k of MFS 9mm that cost me $200 + tax locally, so far 0 malfunctions..... somehow i doubt a reloader can beat this price. At least i havent seen anything cheaper yet.
