I keep seeing a single turkey hen in my hunting area, what does that indicate?
Is she the ugly bag that none of the toms (or jakes) wanna bang, are all her friends and family dead, or are the males lurking quietly? The area I hunt is part of a long ravine, surrounded by a few woodlots and fields. At the start of last season there were lots of gobbles to be heard, but by mid-may, there was none. On the last couple of saturdays last year, I saw a single hen (same one??) running around and this season again, but no gobbles to be heard and no males to be seen!!! Am I wasting my time trying to find a male, or will they show up yet?

In the Spring, the turkeys gather and mate and usually the single hen you see may be nesting already. She will be a loner thru the chick rearing and may join the "flock" in the fall after the chicks are grown. Best time to look for the TOM is during the Spring mating time. he will find her.
