Single Shot 20ga - cheap but not junk?

Cooey or Baikal.

Don't bother with the $100,- turkish "delights". The ones I had came with a 12lbs trigger pull (at least) and you could hear springs rattling while carrying the gun. On a single shot, lol. And then there is the folding thing, oh God.. can't even take the thing down without a tool. Then the threads were cut too long on the hinge screws. So you either tighten them up and opening the damn gun becomes an issue for Schwarzenegger, or you leave em looser causing them to loosen up every time you break the action. That's, in a nutshell, what you get for $100,- plus headache, tantrums and a really strong will to get rid off the POS.

Cooey 84 not Winchester made ones. Cooeys had walnut stocks. Winchester made ones transitioned to birch or something.

Surprised the old Savage model 219 hasn’t been mentioned?? Wanted to add a 20ga to the collection with a C-lect choke installed which initially had me thinking about a mossberg/Stevens bolt gun. Then I discovered the hammerless model 219. In short order I found one at Accuracy Plus gun shop . The C-lect choke is cool when hunting conditions change and it sure is light and a pleasure to carry...

Pre-64 Winchester Model 37. Not the Model 37A or the Model 370, but the pre-64 Model 37. It says "Steelbilt" on the barrel script to let folks know it all steel and no pot metal or plastic. The Model 37 is a very well built shotgun that's light to carry and lasts for many generations as it's a real Winchester made before 1964.

I'm surprised more folks haven't discovered these old gems...

The only one of quality is the Winchester 37 steelbuilt 1 st choice
Everything thing else is junk on different levels even the Cooey’s Just different levels of junk .
The Cooey would be the most reliable.
The swaged chokes do not pattern well but do work

I’ve got an 84 Cooey 20 gauge, and a 37 Winchester 20 gauge, the 37 is a much better gun, but the Cooey has been reliable for over 60 years, never a hiccup.

I do not know of any single shot that claims to be steel shot proofed.
Let us know if you find one.
I am sure that some people have fired steel shot in a single, but that's not guaranteed to have good results.
There are single shot shotguns with choke tubes, but some are not high quality.

I have a Baikal single shot 20 ga, that has modified choke and a relatively thick barrel. I have shot a bunch of steel shot through it with no problems. I really like the hammerless design as well. It seems like one of the few economical single shots that can do it all. I really like the hammerless design as well.

I have scoured the EE every day for 15 years and to my recollection, I have seen a grand total of 5 model 219's in .30-30 and 3 "combo sets with 30-30 barrel and a shotgun barrel". Thats why nobody mentioned them. They never come up for sale.

Should I no longer be hunting and beating around in the bush with my Cooey 84 20 gauge that I paid $50 for 8 years ago? Sounds like it's becoming a collectable show piece.
