Single shot .223?

I am seriously looking at a LRPV single shot in a .223 with a 1in7 twist for this summer, but was wondering if anyone else made a heavy barrel single shot in a .223 with a fast twist? I would assume having someone put together a custom one would be far more then the $1290 I have been quoted so far. I do realize it would be probably be more accurate to go the custom route though. So anyone got some suggestion?

Key problem - availability of stocks.

Barrels, triggers and accessories no problem to help you build a real tackdriving fast twist 223. Got a few on the go right now.

The issue is what stock you want and how much that will cost IF you can get them.

I either make my own or use Lam stocks and my rigs will cost less then the factory rifle AND shoot a whole lot better.

Presently testing a 7 twist 28" McGowen on my Savage LA in a lam BR/target stock. Testing shows it has the potential to shoot 1/2" at 200yds (only fired 44rds so far so brand new).

I sincerely doubt a factory Savage barrel will hold that level of accuracy - 1/2 min has been my experience..

Tikka will get awfully close - but for quite a pretty penny.

I had thought about building a stock out of solid wood or plywood as I have enough carpentry equipment here to build pretty much anything due to my father being a carpenter for many years. However im not sure if I would be able to produce a comfortable stock. As for actions I see that the target savage action are generally around 500 us if you can get them. Maybe im wrong though. I also thought where I am just getting started the LRPV might be a good starting point and when I can get to the point that I am able to shoot better than it can, I can upgrade to a match barrel.

I really appreciate everyone's advice here and hope to hear more.
 
sorry if i am stealing this but does anyone know where someone could buy just a stevens action? its cheap and it is the same action, just repeating and a different trigger. if you were planning on replacing that anyway i have seen some of mystic's builds turn out quite well
 
TrxR, if you have woodworking skills, your homemade stock WILL be way more comfy then most commercial products unless you are Mr. Average.

I have built several stocks for a custom fit to me. What a difference.

Not saying aftermarket stocks are bad, they have to make compromises on the average male shooters dimensions. Why so many competition stocks have adjustable everything.

If you make your own stock, you don't need all that moving stuff cause you can make it all fit you. Plus you will save alot of $$$ which can be put directly into a better barrel.

A custom fit stock AND a match barrel - now we are talking performance.

Drawblood, you will find it much easier and less money in the long run to buy a rifle and sell off the parts you don't want.

Mustic what material would you suggest to build it from? Solid hardwood, softwood or plywood. Me and my father were discussing it tonight and we could do it from a solid piece of stock or laminate some pieces together or go plywood. It wouldnt make much difference. I was just wondering if the solid would accuracy would be affected by change of humidity.

My 40X wears a plywood stock made by someone on Vancouver Island and it is very comfortable.
Unfortunately I have no idea who that person is, otherwise since I'm not a wood-worker I would keep him busy...;)

Hmmm, sounds to me like it could be Hans Adloch.

When you post pictures, I should be able to tell you if it does or doesn't look like one of his stocks...
