Hi all, I am currently in the process of looking for
a nice bolt action single shot .22 rifle just for plinking at the range.
Just wondering what everybodies suggestions are.
I would like a firearm that has an option for a scope later on down the road.
Also what are your views on .17Cal- cost and availability.

Thanks

.17 costs are too high for plinking and/ or targets. a .22 is more reasonable and less harsh on the pocket book.
An older cooey 39 or 75 (available here on EE) is a single shot and with tapping and drilling, ($60) and a set of mounts...along with a good scope...will be quite pleasing to use in range or fields. many other makes like Mossberg, Lakefield Mark I and Marlin have the same singles and usually are grooved for mounts.

CIL/Anschutz rifles were available in various models if you are looking for a nice rifle that can be later used with optics. Several of the models were single shot and are noted for accuracy. They periodically come for sale on the EE. Any reason why you would not want a magazine fed rifle?

Anschutz and CZ make single shot adaptors that fit in place of a mag.
If you could define what you mean by 'nice' would be helpful in proffering advice. There are many single shot models current and older out of production examples. Great range in price also.

My Marlin 17HMR will shoot 1 hole groups @ 100yrds, if you can hold that steady. A .17HMR does cost more to shoot ($20 - 50rnds).
My older .22CIL Anschutz single shot is a great, sport weight rifle with the option of target peep sight, or grooves for a scope mount. $25 will buy 500rnds.
I like them both.
