Single shot LA

It's not an older rifle, but you may want to have a look at the Savage Mk2, or Savage Little Rascal. They both come in left handed models.
The Mk2 could be a great choice if you want him to have something to grow into. You can get single shot adapters to use, until he's ready to handle a repeater.
Out of curiosity, why do you prefer an older rifle? If your heart is set on that, I'd say to look at a Cooey single shot, but I don't think they ever made a left handed model

Indeed. The confusion was that traditional lever actions are typically repeaters and are ambidextrous and are for eith left/right hand. The single shot rifles shown above, more commonly called falling block actions, can be a good choice.
Is the intention to get him into target shooting or hunting? Is he interested in trap shooting? The goal could change your plans alot, some clubs have youth target or trap, if you are plinking in your back yard and maybe want to try hunting this fall or future... some of those older single shots are great, the falling blocks the Martini I had and loved its accuracy but just didn't use enough to keep it.
There are Single shot rifles and shotguns that would do good for him depending on his goal, a Shotgun with an insert could be both and some new rifles like the Henry's in calibers you could hunt a moose with. What he wants to do will affect what you may want to get. I used a single 12 ga for years as a "kid" hunting pheasant, goose, fox...

For the future, there are also those that are left handed but still use right handed firearms (with modifications), APPARENTLY (no experience) it is just a matter of practice.... I remember seeing one that had a left hand stock and right hand bolt in their 6.5x55 but didn't see it but found a 243.
