Hi,

I'm looking for a .22LR rifle that can be taken down or disassembled so that the longest piece is less than 20 inches, for easy packing on camping trips.

It doesn't have to be a real "takedown" rifle, and ease of disassembly and reassembly is not really an issue. There're a few semi-autos that fit the bill, but I'd like a single-shot or manual-repeater too, because this rifle will get dirty and I'm worried about reliability.

Any recommendations ? I willing to chop the barrel too.

I don't have any personal experience with either, but would one of the combination .410/22 guns like the m6 or savage 24 be the thing for you?

My understanding is that the 18 inch limit applies to shortened barrels, but barrels (other than on semis) that are manufactured shorter can be ok. Either way, a break open gun gets around it.

+1 on the combo gun idea. Here is my Savage 24C (.22LR/20ga):

As you can see, it breaks down into quite a small package. :)

"Ruffed Grouse", you're right about the barrel length; as long as the barrel was manufactured as such, it can be less than 18" unless it is a semi-auto centrefire; than it must be at least 18.5". With rimfires and non-semi-auto centrefires, it is the overall length that is important.

As for a solution for you "AManWithAGun", if you'd be willing to consider a semi, perhaps a Henry AR-7 or Marlin Papoose would fit the bill...? I'd probably go with a single shot as they are usually quite easy to take-down and put back together.

The problem with combination gun is that only one person can shoot it at a time. I'm aiming for at least one gun per person.

And I already have the shotgun part covered, and I'm only looking for a .22LR rifile now.

buy a Gevarm E1, it is probably the most reliable .22lr semi known to man, very basic system (3 main moving parts) fires from open bolt takes down to a nice small size. mags are availiable in 8rnd and 20rnd

but it is a little more expensive expect to pay from 250-600 depending on condition and what accesories it has (the 20rnd mags are very difficult to find and EXPENSIVE)

how about a marlin papoose? semi, but they are pretty simple. couple buddies have them and they love em (for what they are).

Yes, I'm aware of semis like Marlin Papoose, in fact I have a WTB ad in EE for a Marlin Papoose.

But I'm worried about reliability when it gets dirty. The Marlin Papoose's action looks a little too delicate to me. I'm worried about a small rock or sands getting in there and easily jam things up.

Consider the AR-7.

You may have to choose carefully to find one with a barrel that is accurate and the magazines will have to be tested for reliability, but the AR-7 was made for your application.

Hi there. There are many choices out there for sure. I have a Marlin Papoose, and it's a good little gun. My Marlin 39 is a bit more weight, and I had a Browning SA-22 and Win 1890 that fell in the same category IMO.

I still have an old Stevens Little Scout 14 1/2 that's simple, and extremely light. You may want to consider one (if you can locate one).

For a gun that is produced today order a Taurus copy of the Win 62 pump it is available with a 16" barrell I believe and you only have to unscrew 1 bolt and thats it! :)

Single shots you can look at the 30 G Stevens Favorite Takedown. The barrel is 20" long so it meets your requirements and is a takedown. I've held one and almost walked out the door with it I like it that much I just didn't have the funds.
