If it was me I'd try cutting it to like a 24" or so barrel first to see if that was handy enough. Also, try making a pistol grip from scratch before you hack that original piece, you might want to switch it back.

Wow, great work man. Too bad Win/64 and some other idiots wrecked the first part of your thread. I like the bluing it looks good not to glossy. I'm getting a free cooey 12ga single shot that i'm going to restore and chop the barrel to 18.5 but the leave the stock intact. I'm also in the middle of restoring a cooey canuck (small single shot .22) its amazing how much a little elbow grease and oil and sandpaper can give a man pride in a gun he wouldnt normally use or care about. I'd like to find a way to blue the gun but i hate glossy "blue" bluing (i know that sounds retarded) but do you have any idea's on what i could use to get a nice matte black finish? (i really dont want to krylon this gun thats too... bubbaish)

The way to get the matte finish on the bluing is to bead blast the hole gun. It gives it a even dull finish. I prefer the a bluing bath. It gets into every little spot but you dont need to. I have done guns with just bluing on a rag and wipe it until there is a even coverage. It still does the same finish just you have to be more careful and make sure you get every moving part. The liquid cold blue from a gun store would do the trick.

I was thinking about that earlier today. I think I might just make a pistol grip from scratch. This is not the original stuck but it still fits alright. I am going to try and get a piece of hardwood tomorrow and try to make a new one before I go to far.

Small update.
Was little bored so I got the barrel blasted tonight. Its getting cut tomorrow when I figure out the length of the stock. I am going to be making a pistol grip from scratch so I dont have to cut this one.

Update

I got the barrel chopped to 20 inches, a pistol grip made from scratch and all stained. Doesn't look that bad. I still have the original butt stock just incase I want to switch it around. I think I like the full stock better. As you can see it still needs a few more things like, stock stained and barrel blued but it will be done tommorow.

It looks great, Mat techs are awesome! The old gun was not made for steel shot anyways, making it somewhat redundant for migratory bird hunting.

I have an old winchested my brothin in law gave me, i've been thinking about restroring it for him. shoot just fine but it's starting to show it's age. no rust, but could use a reblue and wood refinished...


how did you remove the old finish from from the wood? Mine has a bunch of checkering i don't want to sand off on the stock and foregrip

The way I removed the old finish on the stock was I scraped the whole stock down with a exacto blade or a razer blade and it removes the old varnish. If you don't it will gum up the sand paper. I have done it on most of my stocks and it requires minor sanding after it is all scraped down. As for the checkering, I have used a bead blaster and held it back a little. It works good and doesn't remove any wood.
