Well, all this talk about singleshot rifles got the juices going again, and so I finally made up my mind on one that I was watching on the exchange. Sent the "I'll take it" pm.

It's a #1 in .270.... I figure this will be just fine for the local deer and black bears....but there's an oddity about it, that I need you Gurus to solve.

It has a 26" barrel, but also has iron sights installed..... I always thought the 26" bbls were "clean"? Not that I'm complaining.

Maybe it`s because it`s an older production model.....

Nice rifle Warren. You are going to love it. :D

Now get yourself a box of Hornady 140 grain SPBT bullets and a bottle of IMR 4350 and have at it!

I noticed the sights on that rifle too. The heavier forend denotes a #1B but they typically have no sights. Also if you look just beneath the rear of the front scope bell you'll see there is no rear sight shown in the picture. I'd check with the seller to see if he still has it and whether it's included in the package.

A Ruger #1A in .270 was as my main deer hunting rifle for many years. When my interest shifted to shotguns it was traded off along with a couple of other single shot rifles. But the temptation to get another comes up often. A #1S in .45-70 might be fun.

Gary, one of these days I'll get you down this way, and you can school me in the fine art of reloading. :)redface: Still haven't gotten set up to do that, and "Bartell" gives me grief every now and then too.)

Maybe at the 2009 Haggisfest? ;)

as much as i dont like them, perhaps a fold-down rear sight would work with the scope, and if you carry a penny around you can remove the scope in a pinch. ive removed them with the zipper tab on my jacket (although it bends them).

the fold-down rear sights from the old Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifles sell at Brownells for a pittance - i think they were like $10-12. might be worth a shot.

The rear sight on a #1 is a fold down. But with the position of that scope it might not have had enough clearance to fold down.

Scope mounting on a #1 puts the scope further forward than on a bolt action. Note in the picture that the scope is as far back as possible.

Nice piece :D I'd go Nosler BallisticTips or Accubonds with H-4831.
And for varmints, 90 gr. Sierra HP's ... same powder. Owned a few
270's ... always worked for me. Lately a 26-06 & 35 Whelen get most
of the use.

Your No. 1 deserves a better glass than what's sittin' on top of there now !

CB's right ... a No. 1 in 45-70 is a lot of fun !!!

If it was free, I couldn't afford to say thank you for the crappy fold down "Williams" style rear sight. The NECG sight would be leaps and bounds ahead it. I tried to shoot with the fold down sight on my #1 .416 Rigby, and gave up. My solution was a custom quarter rib that allowed me to mount the scope, a Leupold 1.5-5X, so that the ocular was in line with the front face of the falling block. This prevented me from getting hit with the scope and kept the loading ramp unencumbered.

Your rifle is certainly interesting and IMHO desirable. As you say, the #1B usually came sans sights, and even the quarter rib was without the cutout for the rear sight. Quite a coup.

If you want to send me the serial number I can look in the Ruger book and see what age it is and check to see if they made a model with the sights. Ruger did change things over the years and also would make some custom

I don't disagree and feel the same way about the crappy Ruger rings. I replaced mine with a set of QD rings.

I put the same scope on my 1A in .270. Good eye relief, and didn't get in the way of loading. Were I to take the plunge on a .45-70 I'd probably go with a long eye relief Scout scope and mount if further forward. It would be a nice brush gun.

Another thing about the #1. The first time I diassembled it was an experience. Took a few tries before I got the hang of it.

I have a NECG rear receiver sight that screws onto the scope base and is very high quality and repeatable - beats the crap otta open sights!:dancingbanana:

Is this what you're talking about?

wont that interfere with scope mounting?

i dont like the fold down sights either but as a backup that will only see use in emergencies they could be worse. their main drawback is how difficult and unprecise they are to adjust, but once that ordeal is over and you have it sighted in and all the sight screws locked down they are fine as backup sights.

Jury's out on the scope for now... seller informs me that the old Scopechiefs were top quality in its day. We'll see. Otherwise, I have a couple chunks of glass around here that would work nicely.....either a Nikon 2x7 or a Leupold 3x9.

That model of Scopechief is pretty darn nice. I have a couple of those old girls and they are just as good, if not better, than the Elite 3200's. In fact I have a 6 power Scopechief with a 42mm objective that is brighter than the 6 power Leupold I have.

old scopechiefs were excellent scopes at the time.

I have a 3-9x on my 7mmRM, has a Command post option

Ruger #1

It looks like a medium sporter that came with a 26 inch barrel and open sights, but it has the wrong forend on it.
