I have no idea why, but single shot hunting rifles keep calling my name....

The Ruger #1's, the Browning highwalls, etc have a very strong appeal, and likely I will get one someday, even though I don't need one.......

What is it about those guns?

Because there is not a hunter alive who has not thought about peering intently over the sights of a Farhquarson at something interesting.

It's not about 'need'. It's about 'I want'. Using a single shot rifle for hunting means that the first shot absolutely must count. Some people would say it separates the serious shooters from the wannabes.
I've always thought a grizz hunt with a modern, single shot, .45-70 would be interesting.

You think you got it bad now? Check out the C. Sharps or Shiloh Sharps sites on the net, load some of them up with black powder, and you'll be hooked, big time. The CPA site or Ballard will tease you even more, Meacham site is eye-candy, black powder cartridge...the one true way!!

I have a couple Ruger #1's that I love. Bought them both of the EE. Not only are they timeless rifles, but the start to look better with dings and scratches.
Gives them character
My next one will probably be a Ruger #1 in a 22 centerfire.

I had a No1-H Tropical in 416 Rem. It was a beautiful rifle, that shot pretty well. My next one will be a No1-A light sporter in 7x57...someday! :)

I love single shots, but never loved one enough to buy it...They dont' fall within my practical guidelines.

If I had unlimited funds I'd have a couple, proabblay chambered in a deer cartridge.

well I dont have a 45/70 but I do have a TC prohunter in 375H&H thats got a grizz LEH tag attached to it for this spring (also have a 338 backing up this adventure :D )

I have a ruger no.1 in 45-70 and I am really pleased with it. I would love for ruger to make a light sporter in 303 british!

They're not called "gentlemen's rifles" for nothing, ............anyone can blast away with modern military implements, but only a gentleman would pursue his game with a "proper and suitable" firearm, confident in his skill and talents sufficiently to make him a true "sportsman".
Hunting with a Farquharson or Alex Henry is the ultimate sport, and use of a suitable Ruger #1 is not far behind in satisfaction. .........takes one back to when hunting was hunting!

single shot rifles

Don't forget the Pedersoli line...their 1874 Sharps models are well made and shoot as well as you can....if you are shooting black powder cartridge there are some essential loading techniques but once mastered, these rifles are shooters...
There is also the Uberti line of 1885 hi and lo walls...

I am a hard core, incureable ,single shot junkie!:D
I have martinis, Stevens, Rugers, Brownings, heck even my target rifles are single shooters!!:dancingbanana:
Love them all.
Slimbo, didn't you get into that discussion on the 'fire about Ruger Nno.1's and 303's?
I can't believe the guy that said it was Chit, and the 30/40 was not far behind it!!
No class, that's what I say. The fact is , when I asked him to explain he didn't...

Even the gunsmiths drool over the No 1s. Quite amusing to watch a smith fondling a rifle and you dont see it often. They are an elegant design all of them. I would have a Sharps in a blink if I could afford it. Just love the falling blocks but still no idea why...Serious cool factor though. Everybody looks at the Ruger when I take it out. Let a guy shoot it a couple of weeks ago and you could almost see the drool. Huge grin-poor bastard, I know that look.:)

The Ruger #1 is #1 with me.Had a #1-B in 6mm.remington a few years ago.Sold it when the gun grabbers wanted us to register every thing."Like that was going to happen".I liked it because I was left handed and with the tang safety it was quicker to operate than any bolt action I'd had.Now I would like to find one in .223...heavy or sporter barrel...Hmmmm....

When I first saw and handled a B-78 with an octagon bbl..I was hooked on single shot rifles......
At that time I still had the ol 303 I had started with at 12.. it had worked well for everything from bears to moose but I had to have a single shot...the balance , the looks , the "cool" factor. That was important to me back in 1978...
It took awhile before I had the cash to move up and I started with a #1 Ruger International in 270, still have that rifle but now it's a 6mm rem with octagon bbl....my reload books show I started with that rifle in 1986, re-bbled it in 1988 to 6mm Rem. With 75 v-max's it will hold a 2" group at 300 mtrs to this day.
I have a B-78 in 30-06 now, still dont like the trigger..but I'm working on it...
I have 8 # 1 's from 6mm to 458 mag.
My reg deer rifle is a 1-B in 270, for the last 20 years......I had to have something while the 6mm was in the shop....
Single shots are addicting, what they have brought to me is patience...slow
down....wait for the right moment, if not this time...maybe next time.
My son started with that 6 mm single shot at age 11,and it is still his fav rifle at 23 yrs of age, two moose and I cant remember how many deer..
Doesnt matter what the rifle make or action, enjoy the time in the country.. share it with others if you can.

Sharps, Rolling Blocks, Trapdoors, even Cooey 22,s for Rifles and yes the TC's for pistols.
The rifles because I always was a history buff and loved rifles wanted a Sharps when I was eight years old. Took a little longer but I now have 5 of them one rollingblock and a Trapdoor.
The TC pistols I love these guys, buy something really really odd and start building brass to fit from something else.
Ken.
