Single shot shotguns, anyone still use them?

True story.
Many years ago we entered a squad into a ATA shoot and had one fellow cancel.
One of our squad brought a replacement shooter who showed up with a Cooey 84.
Being the elitist f###s we were ,we told him he needed a real trap gun and so equipt him with a spare BT99.
He broke 6/25 and 8/25 in our qualifying round.

Two hours later he shot his handicap round with the Cooey and broke 19/25.
Lesson learned.

I have a single beretta that folds right in half like those new Turkish guns, got it in the ee. Dead cat leather made me a shell holder and sling. Weighs nothing, folds for storage, real grouse slayer.

Id bet that the Beretta is a lot better quality than the Turkish shotguns . I kicked myself a few years ago. I was up north visiting a buddy and we went to a friend of his house . I never bought a almost pristine Cooey model 84 in 20 gauge with the case color still on the receiver for $80 dollars. I regret that one. used to own a Bakail ? 12 gauge . it was stolen many years ago . they are built like a tank . how accurate are those inserts in 9mm or 45 like some have mentioned ? I found it interesting that someone mentioned that Cooey built shotguns that have the Iverjohnson name on them . that's cool . I'd like to see one .

I have a Cooey 84 in 20ga that lives on my golf cart continuously. I bought my first Cooey from Canadian Tire for under $40 back in the 60’s but paid $100 for the one I have now but bought it around 15 years ago.

I listed a Cooey 410 on the EE a few weeks ago at $200 and it sold very quickly.

Many of those Turkish guns are actually a copy of the old Beretta single shots. They sell for about 1/5 of the price new adjusted for inflation.

I have one in 20 guage. It is an FS1. PIETRO BERETTA FUCILE RINFORZATO SPECIALE
GARDONE V.T. BREVETTATO
MADE IN ITALY
Probably the last gun I would ever sell.

Have a Huglu in 28g bought for my grandson, well not made up to some standards.First round I shot with it had to pry the caseing out and everyone after .So had that smoothed over now no issue but to break open the barrel you push the trigger guard back, that might get better or if not will order a rubber mallet. Did I mention it patterns low to the left with the full choke low center with mod and almost dead on with ic.:)

This is reminding me I should take some better photos. I paid $900 for this J & W Tolley and it came with a unique Abercrombie and Fitch gun case that has a serial number. I sold the case for $300 USD. So net for the gun in the $500 range. 29" barrels, 12 gauge, nitro proofs, 2 3/4" chambers open choke, 5 pounds. Fantastic grouse gun.

I know it's no Cooey but what the hell.

You stole it. Beauty gun. The old singles are no handicap. I hunt partridge with an Iver Johnson Solid Rib Champion 16 gauge. Has 2 3/4 inch chamber and 30 inch full choke barrel. Shot birds 50 yards away with it. Couldn't ask for better.

Got a deal for half dozen of 8 insert for single or S/S 12 shotgun with extractor. i all ready gave my twins grandboys a single and inserts kit to each of them. Inexpensive and unique as you able to shoot a dozen+ calibers

Just because a Beretta was copied it doesn't mean that the Turkish guns are quality firearms. in my honest opinion . I've heard their 9mm pistols shoot well but I have heard conflicting stories about their long guns . I have bought firearms so called budget firearms that can work out well after the bugs are worked out. heck even a brand new Ruger screwed up on me several years ago. and it was an on going thing with that model from what I read on the Ruger forms . so now I'm a sceptic .

Unfortunate that the older single shots are seemingly only popping up for sale occassionally, haven't seen any recently on the EE. I'd like to get a nice H&R or a Cooey 84/840 but I'm just not seeing these regularly. Wish these were more common in a 26" length and threaded for chokes as well, almost always seem to be 30" with a fixed choke. Makes the Savage 301 more appealing due to the toolless take down and threaded 26" barrel, but I like the look of the wood stock and fore end so much more on the older guns.

I went ahead and ordered a Stevens 301 today, cheap enough that I really doubt I'll regret it. Rifled .22lr chamber adapter in the mail as well, should be a fun general purpose woods carry gun I think.

I was skeptical of the Stevens 301 forend wearing out but mine shows no wear after 4 or 500 rounds. I recommend oiling the metal well when you get it as the finish isn't bluing. I'm not sure what it is exactly but after several costs of oil it smoothed out and white cotton rags stopped coming off brown. All in all I really like the 301 turkey 410 I have.

What brand 22 rifle adapter did you order and where from?

I still enjoy hunting with single shots, have Cooeys and Baikals. For the price you can’t beat a baikal single shot, they come up on the EE fairly often. They are built tough and the ones I’ve tried have patterned better than my Cooeys. Carrying one in 20 gauge thru the woods is a pleasure.

Thanks for the heads up, I seem to recall reading about that issue with the finish previously somewhere, I'll make sure to oil it regularly early on.

I got a 6" rifled adapter from Chaszel through nine35.ca. Only limited selection right now unfortunately as Chaszel is out of stock on pretty much everything so Ron at Nine35 is not able order any stock to import. These and the rifled adapters from Short Lane which can be purchased through ###### Armory seem to be the best ones out there that I'm aware of, they are all a bit pricey with the Short Lanes costing more in USD than I paid for the Chaszel in CAD(through the respective importers I listed anyway).
