Single shot shotguns

Frank grimes, why a single shot? What is the reasoning behind your choice for a single shot? And I am not saying that it is a bad choice ... When I am on foot all day upland hunting ... most often I grab my H&R NEF single shot because it is the lightest 12ga that I own. But for CAD $1500.- you can get a very nice double barrel ... or a very nice pump shotgun like a Wingmaster.
I think I just like the simplicity of a single shot, I’m not really sure. But I am quite sure I’ll be ordering a Henry.

There are a ton of vintage single barrel 12 gauge guns out there but the majority are specialized trap guns. Finding a quality single barrel gun designed for actually shooting game is harder. But not impossible. I paid less than $1000 for this 5 pound, 29" barrel, J & W Tolley, a high quality English gun that would have been many $1000's more had it had a second barrel. Probably my favorite ruffed grouse gun

How does one find a GP Greener Martini action in 12gauge . I missed. An opportunity to buy one years ago and cannot find one.

I ended up buying 3 from the EE. Decided on my favorite and sold the rest also on the EE. Finding the 3 was a long process and involved an almost daily search for a number of years. They are out there but most people dont want to part with them. I must say though that I could not be happier with the one I have. I have broken 25 in trap on occasion (lots of worst scores to go along with the 25s) and been out hunting many times. Not my most used shotgun but my favorite.

Damn that Tolley all to hell!

Did someone say lightweight grouse gun?

A 16-bore made by Thomas Seymour of London (1841-1844), converted from percussion before 1870, twist-steel barrel re-proofed for smokeless powder.

Love that Seymour Steve. And reproofed for smokeless!!! What a bonus! Is that one you will fire?

And Chris, just wondering if you think a re-finish of that wood is in order. Certainly a different treatment for the butt is called for. Maybe get Claudio to put the action in the ultra sonic cleaner and see what pops out? ;)

It's damn near a perfect gun. That Tolley and my Daly......I find it very hard to imagine how they could be better.

Light and lively, I can see why you favour it for a grouse gun. It appears to have an unusually long length-of-pull. Nice gun. Thanks for sharing.

SS, that's an optical illusion because the gun is so slender. The actual LOP is 13 1/2" from what would be on a SxS the rear trigger. Would be closer to 14" if it had double triggers. My preference is 14 and a tiny bit so this one is fine. Plus, I tend to grouse hunt on cooler days.....several layers keeping me warm and building up the LOP.

I’d give a good used over/under some consideration if that’s your budget... should be able to find a decent citori or an older 680 series for that price. Although your reasons and mileage may vary; You might be happier in the long run with two barrels.

So has anyone actually bought a Henry yet? I’ve had H&R’s, but always had trouble getting my eyes in line with the bead because the stock doesn’t fall quite enough. For $500-ish, a 12 gauge Henry might make a nice do-all.

At the price of a Henry single shot, one could buy 3 or 4 good Cooeys.
I think they are way too much money for what they offer.

Yes, sort of. I have a Henry single shot rifle in 243. I wouldn't spend $500 on a single shot shotgun, especially one that doesn't have a vent rib.

OP, I have a Turkish single shot 12ga with an 18" barrel. It has removable chokes, wood stocks, and a vent rib. It cost me $100 but they can be had for $150ish regularly. Mine takes browning invector chokes, which is nice because that's what my pump and semi both take. Some brands also use optima chokes if you've got a gun with those already in the collection.

Personally if I didn't have one already, I'd totally buy another Turkish one over a CIL or Cooey etc. What you get on the Turkish guns (removable chokes, choice of barrel length, and a vent rib) outweighs any perceived disadvantages in build quality IMO. I betcha a lot of the people ragging on the Turkish guns haven't even shot one.
