SIR/Cabela SKS pics

I finally went to pick up my two rifles at the UPS Store today, where the manager himself was scandalized by the packaging job. It was a tattered looking box with the bolt of one of the rifles sticking out the side, obviously bouncing around in the box the whole time. I would never carry two rifles bundled up the way that they did, much less put them in the mail.

When I got home and opened it up, one of the rifles was not too bad, though it seemed to have suffered a few dings on the butt from the front sight of the other rifle.

The second rifle, however, had considerable rubbing off of the forend around the area where the bolt of the other rifle appears to have been in contact. More importanly however, there is a crack of about 5-6 inches in length in the forend that even if it did not happen in transport, should never have left the store in that condition.

I called SIR first thing, but since there was no manager in, the lady on the phone told me that I'd have to talk to a manager on the phone on Monday to find out if they can offer me a replacement rifle. Otherwise, I'll have to repackage the damaged rifle, ship it back to them, and will then be reimbursed for the postage and either reimbursed the price of the rifle or sent a replacement. And of course there will be the transfer of the firearm, and other annoyances as well.

I just want to get what I paid for with no more hassles or waist of my own time (because they shipped them UPS, I had to make several phonecalls to arrange an alternate pickup location, which hardly went smoothly while the rifles got banged around from place to place). If they'd just buy another rifle from another dealer, swallow the extra cost and send it to me, that would barely make up for the hassle.

It's such a pity, as these rifles would have been fine for my needs were it not for the incompetance of whoever let them go out so poorly packaged!

My SIR SKS was also packaged poorly,no filler around it in an oversized box in which it was banging around.Thankfully it did not pop its barrel or bolt knob out and appears to be in good condition(1954 force matched Tula black painted).I am just about to strip and clean it following the excellent links provided on the sticky. They sent mine as well as another guy I know here by Canada post.

My gun was packed with lots of bubble wrap and filler paper. It still sustained a few stock dings from being in a carboard box unwrapped.I don't think that many employees, at the minimum wage level, can appreciate how much these old guns mean to us.To non-gun people, they have the status of a shovel or trowel, and deserve to get kicked around with gritty packaging, and the nicks and gouges aren't noticed. One Sir SKS I saw looked like it was in a sand fight and lost.Others looked like they were used to bat baseballs when the boss isn't looking.I feel sorry for the folks, that got beat up guns, and think they should send them back for a refund.

Upon stripping and cleaning my SIR SKS,I am fairly happy. It has no bad stock dings or rot and the bore is crisp and bright. As I bought this as 25% history\collectable and 75% shooter I am not going to bother stripping any black paint or stock varnish.

My box of two from SIR was packaged very well. Sounds like they have a two person shipping dept. and one of them needs to be fired (or sent to the Gulag).

I will certainly be sending one of them back, but I paid to get two rifles, not to go through the hastle of sending one back with nothing to show for a bunch of phone calls and travelling just to pick up a box that looked like it came from a dumpster. For all of this trouble, it's anyone's guess whether they have another rifle to replace the cracked one, which means a hell of a lot of work just to get my money back.

I spoke to a manager today who was able to secure another carbine for me and I've already put the cracked on in the mail. I do think that the manager that I spoke to made an honest effort to fix the problem, so we'll just wait and see when the second rifle arrives.

Well, I just got my Tula from SIR/Cabelas. Packaging was a joke, but the rifle made it through unscathed. The rifle came with a sling, two little identicle belt pouches and the cleaning kit. I didn't get an oil bottle....was I supposed to?

For $230 shipped, I am happy with the rifle. I even like the blackened bolt.

If you want another of those Bell refurbs, give Brandon Home Building Centre a call.

What do you mean by Bell refurb? you mean like Bell distributing? I dont know much about these guns, I do know that mine is on the way and should see it next week.

Did they paint the bolts or is it black oxided? We should be able to restore the gun back to something like what it used to look like with some sandblasting right?

The SKS' were imported into Canada by 2 companies; Bell and IZH. They were then distributed to retailers. Please read Curtton's Sticky to get a complete understanding and it will answer all of your questions.
