SIR has a few of the 200's on sale.

I keep reading and re-reading this post and I keep telling myself "DONT BUY ONE" " YOU DONT NEED ANOTHER GUN"... it's so hard...

I figure you buy one and put a cheap bushnell on there and you have a good cheap gun...

must...... not.... give in.... must........ not.....!! :x :x :x

Wow, you guys are convincing me to check this thing out. It will be my first hunting rifle. I was also looking at a Weatherby Vanguard or a Tikka T3, but this is much cheaper, and honestly, most rifles will outshoot me right now.

Here's the first range report with the 300!

River Rat shot it at the range for me yesterday, as I am still hobbling around on this broken leg and had an appointment in the afternoon.

Shot it just as it came right out of the box. No adjustments to trigger, didn't touch the guard screws or anything else. We wanted to see how it would perform just the way Savage shipped it.

Three shots to sight in, and then three more shots for record, printed right at one inch in size. Nice triangluar group, shot at nine power, and this in a 30 KM wind.

Garry says the recoil is what you would expect from a light rifle (weighs 7pounds 11 ounces with scope) and that although the trigger was seemed heavier than what he likes it broke clean with no creep. We weighed the trigger last night. We were both surprised it weighed what it does, 4 1/2 pounds. That is a full pound and a half more than we set our hunting rifles, but the Stevens trigger breaks so clean, it actually feels much lighter. 8)

Load was 73 gr of Norma 204, Rem 9 1/2 mag primers and 180 gr Hornady SSTs for those who are interested. It will be intereting to see how it shoots with some load developemnt.

One very interesting thing, when I went to clean the rifle last night, there was no copper wash or streaking visible in the muzzle at all. Not even a bit. This is quite unusual, in my experience for a brand new barrel. Maybe I have really lucked out and got an exceptionally smooth barrel. Then again, maybe not. Perhaps the Savage button-rifled barrels are that good!

We'll see.

suggestion? 338 Lapua? Stevens 200 thread?

I'll suggest that you sir are lost

Sako TRG-42 in 338 Lapua would be a good one..., although the older TRG-S would be a bit more practical as a hunting rifle.

prices will be a bit more than a Stevens 200

tug, that is an expensive cartridge, usually found in expensive rifles. How much are you willing to spend? (Stevens 200's not chambered in same)

you have to decide what is worth more. having had and heard of close encounters of the big bruin kind one shot stopping power in close cover is what im looking for

reload? How about a 45/70 or 450 marlin lever action? Or a 12 guage shotgun with slugs?

On topic, the steven's 200 comes chambered in 300 Win mag. It packs a pretty good punch.

oh man, a Stevens 200 thread turns Griizzzlllyyyyy

imagine that, oh wait, this is CGN, nevermind!

i guess what im looking for is a one gun show i own a few guns for various ocasions but i have come to the conclusion that the hunter is being hunted a nice 416 or a 460 might be the ticket

buy a Stevens 200 in 300 Win Mag

take it to the gunsmith, dont let his laughter deter you. tell him you want him to pull the tube and install a 416 barrel

when she's back from the 'smith, put your mouthguard in and go deer hunting, but keep an eye over your shoulder

Stevens in 25-06

My friends said that this caliber would be a good one for your first deer rifle, so I got one and took it to the range and had my friend sight it in for me. After we got it at 2 " high at 100 yards my friend did one more 3 shot group with the Federal 115gr Nosler Patition and was around 2 inches. I then put a Limb Saver de-resonator on the front of the barrel and asked him to shoot another 3 shot group. I had seen this product at P&D and thought for $23.00 it might be a good thing to have, seeing as it was going to be my first exp. with a rifle. The first two he fired were touching and the third was 1/4 inch to the right. Wow what a difference! To make sure it was no fluke we did the same test with his savage 22-250. the first group was about 2 inches in a diamond shape, with the resonator they went into the size of a quarter. I put it back on the stevens and my first ever 4 shots were all dead deer so to speak, can't wait to try it again. Regards Greg

Ted - A few of us noticed that while our .223s shot very well out of the box, after another 3 or 4 boxes of ammo the groups really tightened up into sub MOA. Hope yours follows that trend too. 8)
