Our club is running a pair of old Winchester machines. I'm hoping that someone here can point me in the right direction with respect what sort periodic preventative maintenance needs to be done on these machines, i.e. inspection, lubrication, adjustment? Thanks!

Check under the manual section and download the 1574 material. If you have the machine I suspect you have, the picture on the cover of the 1574 manual should be familiar.

If your looking for a Canadian dealer, get a hold of Ian at Western Retro. They are on Vancouver Island and also have a web site. They carry parts, conversion accessories, maintenance scheduling, and machines. will also rebuild.

ninepointer,

Shoot me an email and I'll send you a manual and maintenance guide. These are posted to our website at www.westernretro.net. I'd recommend you keep the maincase lubricated with ATF. Also grease the mainspring adjustment screw and the feed shelf. The release solenoid X127 should have light oil applied to the slide. The escapement cushions will wear. You can replace these or turn them around for more life. The V209 & V215 nylon fingers will break or wear. I like to replace the V215 with a brush. Also the feed shelf should be checked for wear. Also check it's position relative to the cocked carrier plate. The feed shelf is shimmed to be even or slightly lower than the carrier plate. Check that the feed shelf does not bind and moves freely in the V200 bushings. Oil seals should be checked. One on the worm thrust drive off the motor and one underneath where the mainshaft exits the maincase by the mainspring. I have all replacement parts for these machines. Located in Victoria, BC. Ask for Ian .
