How does "skim" bedding differ from a standard bedding job? I have done several bedding jobs on standard wood and synthetic stocks, but now that I am thinking of skim bedding a stock with an aluminum bedding block I am having little luck finding information on the internet that makes sense to me. Several threads I have seen on other forums show step-by-step photos that result in bedding jobs that don't look nearly as good as the ones I can do myself. Most of those threads show holes drilled into the bedding block to create the mechanical lock for the bedding compound...can this actually work with such a thin layer of compound? Is it a good idea to relieve the stock material around the block to hold bedding? What do I need to do for this that I wouldn't normally do for a wood stock?
The gun is a single-shot Savage model 12 action, in a HS stock. I have a second stock for it, a laminate with pillars, and the gun shoots slightly better when placed in that one. I am thinking that perhaps bedding the HS (which I would prefer to use) would allow me to at least match the accuracy I get with the laminate...or should I be looking at something else?
