Skinning knife

Moras are great

Used cutco knives for several years, they were ok

Now I use a havalon for everything, it’s awesome

Great Edge Retention with the VG-10 Steel

do not know the last one but the two first are really with big blades for a skinning knife. they may be good as an army or survival/bushcraft knives but a skinning knife.

what did you skin with them? really interested to hear your experiences with them.

This guy does some great reviews, skins many deer with a wide range of knives and gives some great feedback. Great channel. I really like the havalon piranta aswell, its very light so I dont mind carrying another fixed blade with me thats more suited to camp chores.

I hunt all fall and trap all winter, tried all kinds of knives and for the price nothing beats a mora they are great. In fact I cut off the front and back quarters off a full grown bull cow that died and used it for bait for my snares, did the whole thing without using a steel to touch up the edge,,forgot it at home. If you loose one its no big deal as they are about $15 bucks. They have different sizes to meet your needs. Amazon is best place to buy them. Caribou also make good knives, check out Dam beaver supplies, they have a good selection.
I also have some Benchmades with s30 v, some Bucks and other higher end knives but after loosing a Hidden Canyon hunter I paid over $200 for they stay at home.

I'm the same way, i like to have and hold my better knives, but i tend to use the Mora most often. They're cheap enough that i've got one in my pack, vest, car, truck, etc, so that there's no chance i'll forget my knife and not have one.

The H1 & F1 are very stout knives yes, but still, good for skinning.
Deer hide near peels back from the sharp convex edge & weight alone from the H1
The F1 is an EDC for Hunting, versatile, strong, well suited for skinning also, handle does lose some grip if blood soaked
Have skinned many deer with the Fallknivens, all hanging in barn or at hunt camp, very effective knives.

The Spyderco Moran is razor, good belly, thin profile, flat ground blade, excellent Skinner
Moran is not full tang, clocks in at half the weight of F1.

Still lightyears ahead of a Bark River or other smooth G10 knife or wood handle, for that matter. I've also skinned numerous bear, elk, deer, moose and bison with my F1. Great knife. Not too big, not too small with the 3.8" blade.

After a Decade plus of hard workouts and skinning jobs F1 has held up great. Handle has smoothed out some out since new, well expected from the tough use it has been through, yes excellent knife

Ok, I know I am going to sound like a heretic but my main hunting/skinning knife for years has been a plain old box knife. The blade is always uber sharp and I never wonder where it is, as I have them peppered all over the place because they are so cheap - $5 or less. On on the flip side its clearly not as pretty/###y as everybody's else' knives, so carry on. :)

All Knives will Cut, Stab, & Slash, some better than others. Make, Model, Materials, Fit, Feel, Design, Ergonomics and the list goes on, is one's choice. If the boxer knife works, press on, cheers

Fallkniven PXL has done pretty well for a folder over the years for me, skinned a number of critters from blacktail deer through moose and caribout with it. I now almost exclusively use a Havalon. Was not a believer until I client gave me one, and all the other guides I know swear by them too. The versatility is hard to beat when you have to turn lips, eyelids, nostrils etc to prep for taxidermy. I don't love the replacable blade aspect, and you've gotta be careful not to cut yourself changing blades with bloody fingers, but they are razor sharp, and you can buy a number of different scalpel styles for them.

After using cheap knives for 25 years, I finally stepped up and bought an Esee 4 in 440C. I know 440C isn't a ###y super steel but it's leaps and bounds above common steels like 420HC, 4116, 8crMov13, etc found on cheap knives. I can skin, quarter and debone an elk and then just strop it a few times and its hair popping shave sharp again. I will never go back to cheap knives again. Next on the want list is something in S90V or maybe CPM3. I like the looks of some of the Bark River and Benchmade in those steels.
