SKS 18.6" barrel chop, worth it?

Here's another one done... plastic stock, 19 inch barrel, reinstalled front sight, threaded the muzzle, muzzle brake screwed in. I don't know why but I like that.

Note: as always I only bubba pre-bubba'ed SKS'es!

I was going to cut the barrel down to get rid of the bayonet lug.But then changed my mind, cut the wings on the bayo lug and filed it round just to keep the cleaning rod in.Stuck a sliver of flat spring in to keep the rod in. Now I like the look of it.

18' will be a bit long, I would suggest that 18 3/4 " would be a better length, Ok>ok. just had to rub it in, you can't cut it at 18 inch.

Actually you can cut it to 18”+ but would put in the restricted zone, which wouldn’t make any sense.

Below 18” cut is prohibited. You’d be an overnight criminal ;)

Indeed. Once I've chopped the bayo lug off, you try to put it on the barrel. But the few times I've done this job, I've had to clean the barrel a bit - or a lot in one occasion - with fine sanding paper so that the front sight slides all the way in. (bit by bit... you want the front sight to fit tight, but not so tight that you need a sledge hammer to drive it all the way in). Once I'm happy with where it ends up, I mark the barrel through the front sight pin hole, remove the front sight, file a notch of the same diameter as the pin (carefully, and trying to keep it leveled). Then, slide the front sight again, index it one last time, put the pin in.

This thread reminded me how fun this job was so I've decided to do it again on a bubba's SKS I've kept here, so today the motivation was there. Give me a few more minutes I'll bring pics. :)
Hey Lou, that's prity much what ive done a few times, but here is one step easyer. when you get the front site to fit the way you want , red lock tight it, square it up, and let it set. the next day then I put it in the mill and just redrill the hole through the original site base hole. no fileing, no getting it crooked

This idea fits in the "why didn’t I think of that before" category. Thanks Beater!
