SKS 223 conversion possible

But why would you convert? 7.62 x 39 is cheaper to fire and for the typical barrel length and the other components of the gun would have about the same accuracy at 50 or 100 yards, anyway. If you are hunting, 7.62 x 39 is a better round. Anyway, just my opinion.

Bah, Dont listen to those comments. I've done things because I wanted to know if they can be done! Yeah, sure, sometimes it ends up costing about the same for a brand new rifle, but lets do the math here.

The cheapest .223 rem semi rifle I know of is a mini-14. I've read some threads that they are no longer being imported, and a new one can easily cost you $1000. Used ones about $700.

The sks will cost you $200, which leaves you $500-$800 that you can use to 'convert' it to .223. I think, if its possible, you will be far under $600 when your done (not counting your time).

What better to start off with then a $200 rifle that you dont have a lot of money invested in. That way, if you screw up, your not out much.

Then, once you actually convert it to .223 rem, you have a 'one off' that you can hunt with down in S/W Ontario.

If you go ahead with your project, take LOTS of pics, and start a thread for us project junkies to follow along with! Now back to the ultimate question, what would one have to do if he wanted to change the sks to .223 rem? I know the sks can be rebarreled, but what would you have to do to the chamber/action/magazine to get the .223 rem in there?

Exactly. Who the F*** said anything about being practical? Hell, if I want to rechamber a 10ga to .22short, why the hell not? He only asked, don't fart on the guy for asking. If he asked if it was worth his while, then yes, those comments would be appropriate.... Geez!

Point taken Fry. To answer his question then:
Has it been done? Probably. But you can't really help but comment on how impractical a mod like that would be... so put down your guns Fry, I meant no harm. :p.

Here are a couple practical .223 "Hunting Rifles":

Tavor Bullpup .223 - at $3000 is a bit pricey. NON-restricted, though.

Another beautiful hunting bullpup...

The Norinco Type 97 at $849

* Same wonderful quality as an SKS
* Cheaper than an AR
* .223/5.56 and NON RESTRICTED - Perfect for hunting
* Bullpup design is sure to annoy Liberals

Both are at http://www.canadaammo.com

We had 2 'must haves' when attempting the SKS-223 conversion - that it accepts AR mags, and that the bolt hold-open would still function. Found out late in the process that there isn't enough room forward of the mag for the cartridge to feed - no matter how aggressive the barrel was 'notched', the round kept stubbing into the barrel face. If I could have moved the mag back 1/4", it 'may' have worked, but the project was scrapped.

Has this already been done?

If so who has :)

After fiddling with one for a while, here is what needs to be done. Set barrel back at least 1/4", make feed ramp. Make new bolt from scratch (needs to be 1/4" longer). Check headspace. Make new firing pin, make new extractor, weld mag well on gun, make stock cutout larger. In the end, not worth the hassle. Making a new bolt was the killing factor on the project.

Hehe looks like I stirred up a small hornets nest on this :)

I just thought with all the ruskie sks's coming in that it would make a good semi action for a caliber for sw ontario hunting

I am not a big fan of the T97 or tavor.

It would be great to make one in like 6.5mm :)

$250 plus $800 for work seems like it would be worth it.:stirthepot2:

That, and you know the answer to your question...
Anything can be done if you have enough money and time.
With that said, your question immediately goes from "Has it already been done", to "Why the hell would you wanna do it?" lol. I would like to see one though.
