Been thinking about getting either a steel 5/30 or a tapco 5/20. Do these things work well? Any feed issues with either of them? I'm leaning towards the 5/30 simply because its steel, but they do kinda look ridiculously large.

I like the tapco mag as it's well built and has been very reliable for me. The tapco's cheaper also and either way they both hold only five rounds so...personally couldn't justify the extra cost.

I have both. I can NOT make the end of the duckbill on the metal one catch. It will pull out. It will feed but it's not secure. I've tried to make it work and have given up. Maybe it's just me or my Sks. I dunno. If anybody knows what im doing wrong please speak up. The tapco ones have worked great for me. I had to do a small bit of filing to make them seat. But after that they work perfectly. Here's a pic you can see where I had to file. I don't know if all Sks's need this for the mag to seat properly or not. My vote is definetly for the tapco.

Hope this helps

I dont wanna come off as a jerk here, but can I ask one thing?

Why?

Just to have them for the looks?!?! I have an SKS, and have no desire to buy a 20 or 30 round pinned to 5 rounds. Kinda like buying a Corvette that has been restricted to 100 HP...

Or is it just because its easier than loading from the top? Which doesnt bother me but whatever... I could see buying a whole whack of these and being able to reload quickly... But I cant justify the cost.... But hey to each their own

Again, not tryin to be an A hole... Just curious as to the draw to these "High Capacity" Mags?

the mag is like a pair of shoes, or set of tires, it completes the look of the rifle (my opinion). Ever look at a vz58 without the mag inserted? doesn't even look like a rifle.

My reason is just for looks. Planning on getting another sks to keep as it came from Russia, and mod the other a bit. Anyways, went ahead and ordered the tapco.

Tapco took some fitting to get into the Russian wood stock, but seems to be good now.

I agree that the metal ones just seem ridiculously long. Also makes shooting off a bench a little difficult. Requires a really tall rest. LOL

the 20 round metal mags are pretty cool and work well. I bought the rifle from another nut, not sure where he scored the 20 rounders.

I just bought 1 tapco 20round mag. I like the look of it but I couldn't get the stripper clips to work, are they supposed to? If the stripper clips won't work then I will probably go back to stock for ease of reloading.

A LITTLE light filing is required on the feed lips to enable the use of stripper clips with a tapco mag. Hold your origional 10 rnd mag beside the tapco one and compare the feed lips. It will be obvious what needs to be done. Did it to both my tapco 20's and they now work with strippers. Took 10 minutes. YMMV.

Do you have to field strip the whole rifle to make the adjustments?
Can someone do a quick howto to fit the tapco in an sks?

Once you make the opening larger for the tapco, will the original mag fit decently if you want to go back to a stock look?

I've got a Russian sks and don't want to change it permanently if possible
Thanks

Pop out the trigger group, remove original mag, replace trigger group, pop in tapco. easy. should take about 45seconds if your slow. Other than fitting the tapco mag to the wood stock.
