SKS @ 80 yards

X2Pepere. I use 8 to 12 inch black at 100 yards. With a bench and good rest 3-4" group is common-5 shots. A friend shot under 2" with commercial sporter ammo. Clean well! after corrosive ammo.

is it worth getting into reloading to get better groups out of an sks, or better to get a second rifle in say .223 ?

With refrence to the OP, i have to realy work to get groups like that at 50 yards.

And I will probably still get some flyers in there that would kill any chance of a decent pattern.

If you want to reload just for better groups out of the SKS, I'd say it's not really worth it. The SKS never has and never will be a tackdriver. It's a battle rifle (actually carbine) intended to be Minute of Western Imperialist Dog!:p

I have heard of SKS' with handloads getting 2 MOA (2" at 100 yds), but with surplus ammo so cheap, it doesn't seem worth the money. Just my 2 cents - YMMV.

I would suggest getting a better rifle if you want tight groups.

I made up some six inch targets up and shot them up with some commercial ammo as well as some army surplus stuff. The new post is up with the title "sks @ 100 yards"
