SKS a good starter rifle - or is it?

First of all I would like to thank everyone who took the time to answer, lots of good advice and points of views! A few comments
the moderator moving the thread here
I can totally understand why this was done... but it sort of biased the answers no? I would imagine that most people who hang out in this forum *love* the SKS.

Then again, a good case scenario would involve me NOT getting the guns for several years (much rather have my dad alive than a .22, thank you very much!) so perhaps I shouldn't wait? Hmm
Actually during the course for the PAL they did have SKS as practice riffle, and the stock did feel a tiny bit short... apparently this is a Chinese model issue? I'm only a bit taller than average.

You know, not *every* liberal is anti-gun. Both my father and I are (gasp!) liberals (although the "it has to work" kind... pragmatic liberals I guess). I might be risking the tar and feathers, but there are liberals who like guns, and they could be your best allies - we have more chance of convincing other liberals that over-regulation of guns isn't productive.

I completely agree. So why am I asking about the SKS? One of the reason I'm getting my PAL is because my father is in poor health, and I've been told you need your liscence to inherit the family guns. My dad has shotguns and a .22, but no centre-fire riffle. So I am going to get a .22 bolt action eventually.

Yes, but the odds of a serious mistake being made still seem greater than with a bolt action. Maybe I'm wrong.

Indeed! I already have a sword *and* know how to use it for when I run out of ammo. And an SKS would be way better than a .22... (but wouldn't a shotgun be best? I'm so confused!!!)

I'm a liberal (Card carrying NDP actually) and I love the SKS, I'm getting 2 as soon as my license comes in (1 Russian, keeping it stock, 1 to dress up mall ninja style). I love seeing people shoot their SKSs and would love it if we could overturn the AK ban, get on that conservatives (stop taking our taxes and pissing them away on the F35 and take the Valmet 76 wedge and extend to all AK variants so I can get a Saiga)!
Also you may want to try getting the whole taking ###'s rights away and teaching creationism in science class thing under control, it makes all of you look bad. Oh and stop fighting the war on women too, that ain't cool.

Really? How do Russians even fire those things? I fired a standard one and one with a tapco stock over the weekend and even though I prefer the wooden commie look, it was just too uncomfortable to shoot
but it's so damn fun to shoot and looks so darn good, that I just put up with this "little" problem 
I would absolutely buy a pink gun, and then I'd buy the g/f one too...
Thanks to everyone who has posted in here. I've had the same thoughts as the OP and this thread more or less solidifies my intentions on buying an SKS as a first gun when the time comes.
Maybe it's my long monkey arms, my wrist is at a painful angle for me to shoot the thing, at least with the iron sights (I don't even know if putting a different sight on the thing would make a difference to be honest). I'm not being racist, but these Chinese commies, they ain't the biggest people in the world I guess.

I would certainly train and educate ###s on the ownership and use of firearms and a good case could be made that as an oppressed minority, they should be given the right to carry concealed.

They make a rubber butt pad extension... But I do agree, when the SKS comes out to play, the Cooey 64 comes with also beacuse the contorted position is unbearable after a few hundred rounds... I'm going to get the UTG butt pad extension soon and solves this problem....

Conservatives are not my enemies, they are my political opponents there is a big difference and the way to get things done is to talk things over, not set up separate siloes of idiocy where all we do is hear people who agree with us.

Guns are just my hobby, conservatives come with too much baggage and I straight up don't agree with their policies, the heart wants what it wants. I'd rather my future children get free commie health care than own weapons for any infantile 'rebellion against government' fantasy.

I use 1 inch rubber butt pad and it's ok (I am 6 ft tall).
