Yup, I'm working on two big projects at once. Funny how I do nothing while I have a job and money but once I'm a poor student stuff gets done.
This is part 2 of my project, to read about the prototype concept proving Version 1, check out this link: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=76724
For version two I wanted to make a new "AK47 lower receiver" that was bent sheet metal like the real AK's. After some checking I noticed that the inside dimensions of an AK receiver are extremely close to the outside dimensions of an SKS. Since I want to build an AK copy, I had a company in the US that makes AK receiver blanks bend me up some metal.
THESE ARE NOT AK RECIEVERS! All they are is pieces of bent metal. They are too long, not shaped right, and lack the top rails to be used as AK receivers.
Bent metal
As you'll see, the SKS fits perfectly inside the bent metal. It's so perfect you'd think it was designed that way!
Receiver inside "AK blank". Note rear mounting post and excellent welds.
To locate all the holes I downloaded a number of AK receiver templates and spend a couple nights laying them out and comparing with the SKS. As the SKS bolt is longer, the mag well is located further forward than AK. I cut the template just behind the mag well and located. As you will notice, it would be impossible to use this as an AK receiver. Note all lettering that would identify template as being for a rifle blacked out to stop nosey people at the shop from getting on my case.
AK template chopped and glued to bent metal. Template is 1" shorter at the back to fit the rifle.
Today I got the "receiver" drilled and I just need to cut everything out with my Dremel. As luck would have it, i left my Dremel at my country home and don't have it in the city.
Drilled and ready for cutting. AK selector lever and hammer installed for s**ts and giggles.
Once the mag well and trigger holes are cut out I'll need to get final location of the "lower receiver" to the SKS receiver figured out. I may have to modify the hammer again. Material off the top and front will have to be removed. I'm most likely going to have some screws at the top portion of the "lower receiver" that screw right into the SKS receiver, as well as the two mounting points at the front and back bottoms.
I still need a new firing pin if any one has one.
Legal Disclaimer
For all you nervous nellies. Semi-automatic only AK47 trigger components are not controlled items. What I have built is not an AK47 receiver, it will not possibly function with any AK47 parts other than the trigger, hammer, and safety. This is not a firearm, this is a stock.
