Its a standard soviet SKS with no modifications except for the magazine pinned (a rod welded to follower). I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue & how they solved it. I assume it has to do with the rod deforming the follower. The bolt always just drives the last round into the front of the magazine. The round stays flat in the mag and makes no effort to lift into the chamber. Other wise the gun works fine.

Springs do not lose temper except from very long term extensive use.
Look in the mag for burrs etc. How the pinning was done may be the issue. Like points says.

Not always true. Not everything is made equally. Different manufactures, tolerances etc. I'd still put my money on the follower as it's the most likely suspect. The spring, not so much.

If the rod is preventing the follower from moving freely, that is your problem. I have seen it befor.

yeah that was the problem. The rod wasn't cut where it should have been. The way it was prevented the follower from moving at all. I took a demel and cut the edge and now every thing works great.

Thanks.
