A quick google search turned up nothing on this... perhaps I need to refine my searching skills. Meanwhile, how does one load up the stock Russian ammo pouches with ammo for the SKS? I'm sure the soviet army had a plan in mind.

Thanks!

Hmmm! Thanks! Actually, I just tried 4 full stripper clips alternating pointing up then down and it fits amazingly.

Currently, though, I have some bulk ammo packed away at 20 rounds per box and I can fit 2 boxes snuggly.

I suppose one could just dump the raw ammo in and fit as much as they wanted.

Buy a surplus Chinese sks bandolier, if you include the bigger end pockets which hold 3 stripper clips you get 210 or 230 rounds in total if I remember correctly. Lever Arms always has them in stock, they're great.

@Cb750K: Totally not what I was asking but I saw what you were talking about and I have one on order :). Thanks!!

@VancouverSkiBum: I had no clue they made 5 round stripper clips. I have 8 of the 10 round. I have to do more shopping, it seems.

They don't make 5 round stripper clips, you make them yourself.

I fit 4 full sized clips in my pouches. Three down facing, one up.

All good, the small pouches the sks come with are nice. They just only hold so much ;)
The bandolier is a good way to bring out more ammo loaded on stripper clips, bonus is you get to wear it.

If you have a pair of bolt cutters try cutting a stripper clip in half, the cutters automatically pinch and crimp the cut end neatly. You don't get rounds falling off when in the pouch or bandolier, or you can cut them with a dremel and crimp with a hammer. Being spring steel they are really hard, I find the bolt cutters to be the quickest way.

I don't think I'll be cutting my stripper clips. I get the reasoning but it's 2 things I could be dropping in the mud rather than one. Ah hell, they are cheap. Maybe I will try that out. Bolt cutters? Like the big ones thieves use in movies to cut locks?

You don't have to go quite THAT big, but bolt cutters do work like a hot damn for cutting SKS stripper clips.

As for WHY, I do it because (thanks to our stupid phucked up laws ) our mags are only allowed to have 5. I see no point in loading half of a full clip and stuffing it back into the pouch. Pain in the aZZ IMHO

^^^This, way easier to just load off a five rd stripper. I just load and stick the empty clip into back pocket, no need to drop it in the dirt or mud. They're short enough that you don't notice them in your back pocket.

And yes regular bolt cutters like for locks, they come in smaller sizes. Mine are 12-18" in length, good for cutting small bolts, chain, chain link fencing, small padlocks etc. Light duty stuff, I bought them way back when I was working property management. Handy little tool, fits in a work bag or average size tool box.
