sks and Ammo purchase

Gonna get an sks soon and maybe a mosin nagant.I have been reading a lot of posts here and it's very helpfull and confusing!
I guess I want a Tula 1953 or newer and would like the best barrel I can get with a lam stock .For the mosin I would like pre 1936 without the round reciever,,,and the best barrel I can get,,for the best price
AMMO, Is corrosive that bad and should I fire it in my rifles ,,if not where is the best place to get non corrosive 7.62x39. ?

As long as you clean your rifle after shooting you will have no problem with corrosive ammo, corrosive ammo is the way to go unless you want to pay more, a box of 20 rounds S&B non corrosive soft point ammo is 20$, a dollar per round, a crate of 1200 corrosive ammo is around 260$, around 22cents per round. big difference.

As far as I'm aware they are the only place with surplus 7.62x54r in stock right now. You can buy a mosin/ammo and SKS/ammo package and if you buy @ the same time you should save a bunch on shipping.

Go with one of those Izhevsk rifles on the westrifle website. I just bought a Tula with a hardwood stock from them and it's sweet and I'm waiting for an izzy with an original hardwood stock to go up. The non refurbished hardwood stocks are nicer in my opion but the laminated ones are practically brand new.

Yes , went on the Tradeex site ,a crate of 1200,7.62x39 czech 1993 corrosive.$225. shipping incl. so that is probably where I will get the ammo.
Locally in Halifax so far $250. for 1120,crate.
 
i wouldn't shoot the corrosive unless you are going to shoot more than 100 rounds in a sitting its a pain in the ass to clean

and it looks like old western scrounger in in the US, look at west rifles they have them for 135 shipped

I deal with them fews weeks ago, i bought somes stripper clips for my VZ52/57. They are in U.S West Virginia, can be a good place to find small scarce items sometimes and the service is very good.
 
Shoot corrosive, it's a lot cheaper and get more fun out of it, only thing is clean your gun well when you finish up a day from the range and your gun will remain perfect.

This! corrosive only means the primer solution leaves salt deposits on everything the gases touch. The salt speeds up the rusting process along with the high heat and moisture from firing the rifle. Depending on conditions it could take a couple hours to a couple months for rust to form, but a good cleaning after every trip and especially a light coat of oil on all the metal eliminates any corrosion. Many armed forces used corrosive ammuntion over the years, it is not a problem for a properly maintained rifle. For rifles, check out Westrifle, they have a spring special on $195 for SKS's and $135 shipped for Mosins. The SKS's are very nice, Ive got a '54 Tula non-refurb laminate coming for less than local shops are selling heavy refurbs!

Good info,much appreciated from all.Did you get the tula for the sale price of $195. or do you have to pay more,also I hear the hex mosins built before 1936 or so are better quality.They all look nice,and I am itching to push the buy button,,,wanna make a good choice though!

Its true that the mosin with hex receiver have nicer finish because the later round receiver were war time production but with a very good bore, both shoot great so its a matter of personal choice, you cannot go wrong with either of them, condition equal ofc.:)

Yes the tula was on their spring special pricing. The spring special mosins are shooter grade with good bores but have minor imperfections like handling marks etc. All the details are on Westrifles site. They pay the shipping on them too. Also budget shooter supply has 7.62x39 & 54r
 
nothing wrong with corrosive ammo at all. lots of fun for super cheap.
i dont understand why people ##### about cleaning their guns. maintenance is key!
personally i enjoy cleaning my guns
 
Bob, there isn't anything wrong with shooting the corrosive ammo if you take all the upper components off your SKS right after shooting and wash, dry, and lightly lube with G96 all the parts before re-assembly. You don't lubricate the inside of the gas tube or the gas piston, of course, just clean thoroughly and then dry. If you're okay with doing that within a couple of hours of firing, every time, then shoot corrosive. Popping out the firing pin and cleaning it and it's hole in the bolt will keep it from rusting and guarantee that your SKS won't slam fire because of a dirty or rusty firing pin. I went with non-corrosive and installed the Murray's spring loaded firing pin, partly because I'm not inclined to do all that disassembly and cleaning in the bush on a camping trip, and because I prefer the safety factor of the spring loaded firing pin.
 
Another comment to increase your confidence about corrosive ammo. I shoot them in my sks and my cz858 all the time. Ps. I also have a mosin nagant too. If I want to shoot some tighter groups and have it non-corrosive I choose Prvi Partizan, they have them in both calibers. A good tip I learned from an older gentleman at the range is that what he does after a day of shooting corrosive ammo through his highly modded cz858, is he shoots 5 or so rounds of non-corrosive ammo, this flushes out a lot of the corrosive salts from the barrel making it much easier to clean. Here's some 7.62x39 surplus that I have, there's another additional crate or two now :)

Shoot corrosive, it's perfectly fine! And you will end up shooting a lott more for a lott cheaper, making you have more experience and be a better shooter.
