SKS and corrosive ammo...

Finally shot some of my '59 dated Czech M43 out of my '64 Factory 26. Man, that stuff reeks. I didn't have the time to shoot for groups but I put 10 rounds rapid into about 4 inches at 50m. With patience and a rest I'm sure it will do a lot better than that.

And of course, a thorough cleaning afterwards.

What does the powder from corrosive ammunition smell like?

Chinese powder has a definite smell, and north american ammo powder doesn't hardly smell.

Cz stuff smells like Ammonia, and cat piss.
Chinese stuff smells sulfuric.

IMHO if any part of the rifle still smells like this after cleaning then the rifle is not clean.

"Corrosive" ammo is highly overrated .... I shot corrosive ammo in mine (always have), when was that again ? I don't remember, months ago anyway, just like in my Nagants. Sometimes things get a little "sticky" if you go for long periods without cleaning, but it has ALWAYS cleaned right up when I decided today is the day the girls get some TLC. Call the "clean right away or else" fear mongerers what they are, fear mongerers. As long as you clean it regularly as you do with any other firearm you own, it'll out last you, your children, and quite probably your grandchildren. The only difference is that the longer you wait, the more elbow grease it'll take once you get to it, that's all.

I agree.
I have a norc chrome lined sks and I shot 300 rounds through it one day. I waited about a week to clean it and checking the bolt and other non-chromed parts after cleaning, there was no rust at all. The chamber as well, that does not appear to be chrome lined, was absolutley fine, not a bit of rust whatsoever.

People seem to worry so much about corrosive ammo and cleaning their rifle after they shoot before they leave the range. Its true that its better safe than sorry, but they are putting out work that really isn't necessary right away.

I know if you wait 6 months, there will be problems however :) there was a great post on THR with a guy that had his AK confiscated while shooting corrosive. He got it back 6 months later or something and the barrel was pretty much a smoothbore!

I didn't know that the norcs were available with the chrome lined barrel...right now, even without the chrome lined barrel, norc sks seem to be in short supply with dealers...I've spoke to several, included lever arms, marstar, etc and they are all waiting. I might as well order one of the Russian ones, and wait too!

all early chinese and norinco SKS have chromed line barrel.
someone mention non-chrome , he meant the chamber isnt .

BTW. i bot a nice norinco SKS, very nice on the exterior but however there was rust in the gas tube and pitting in the barrel near the chamber . what a shame, the previous owner couldnt find time to clean it soon after using it.
