I just use ballistol to both clean and lubricate them, works fine for me.

Same here. After shooting corrosive in my two SKS's (Russian&Chinese) and a Mosin, I never use water like some people suggest just Ballistol. After all, Ballistol was invented in 1904 for the exact purpose of cleaning military guns after shooting corrosive ammo.
