I've just finished installing my XCR mag adaptor from HICAL, and I'm pretty happy with it. Haven't fired it yet (tomorrow) but it feeds dummy rounds flawlessly.
I wouldn't consider it a DIY project unless you have a milling machine.
Forward end of mag well after milling (used a 3/8 carbide end mill) , you can also see what the bottom of the breech block (bolt ?) looks like after milling .....
Aft end of the mag well .... you see where I deepened the 'Hold open device' about 1/8" ( again with 3/8 carbide end mill)
Picture of unmodified HOD for clarity (pic stolen from the internets)
Three angles of the breech block (bolt?) after milling with 1/2" carbide end mill .....
Unmodified bolt for comparison ......
After all the metalwork was done, about 15 minutes with a chisel opened up the inleting of the stock and that was it.
There are no published dimensions for the machine work so it was whittle a bit at a time and test for fit.
I also had to modify the mag slightly at the front and rear for bolt clearance. I suppose I could have cut some material off the bottom of the bolt
but it was just easier to take a file to the mag .....
Went to the range this weekend, attending the EOSC Fall Milsurp shooting match. Great fun!
Just for the fun of it, I decided to use my modified SKS for the "Mad Minute", thought it'd be a great test for it (even if that put me out of this short competition, ranking is reserved for "as issued" firearms )
Flawless operation, I went through 50 rounds. here's the video; skip to 2:20 to get to the actual mad minute. I'm about in the middle of the pack, and the only one with a plastic stock of course... Next to me was a Mosin M44, great fire breather. Near the end, I'm emptying a mag in about 4 seconds.
