SKS at Lever Arms

Here are some pictures of the one I bought on monday, I'm not finished oiling the stock but I thought I'd put it together to see how it looks.

Got my SKS yesterday. Everything matches except the trigger unit. It is a factory 816 with an odd spike bayonet. The stock is a dark color and does not match the upper handguard. The stock also has a cartouche on it, a triangle with a 2 inside. I have never seen a cartouche on a Chinese stock before. It is in new shape and has a very smooth action. Came with a cleaning kit, sling and oil bottle. The cleaning rod seems too short (17 inches long) and rattles around so I took it off. Other than that it seems to be a nice rifle and I can't wait to shoot it come spring.
 
Miles your rifle looks to have nice wood. Doesn't shine like the others I've seen. How much are the new SKS going for at Levers? And these ones have the metal butt plate too. I have to say that the rubber pad does help in trigger pull if you have ape-like arms, but the metal one is how it should be and you can put the tool kit in and get it out if you need it

The new SKS rifles are 149+GST+shipping. Miles has stripped the stock and refinished it. The stock Norinco finish looks like crap, my upper handguard is orange and the stock a glossy brown. The stock does come with the metal butt plate with the cleaning kit pass through. The rubber extension pad adds 1" and still allows the cleaning kit to be stored in the stock. Here is what the lever arms rifles look like:

Thanks Dar. Nice rifle! Good deal. I thought Miles' stock looked a little too nice to be original. I think I'll strip one too.The earlier SKS' from Lever had the rubber pad with no hole for the tool kit, but the "one inch" certainly helped.

Probably just different parts of the tree (Innie/outie) or simply trees with different soil conditions... lots of factors can limit the colour and pattern of wood in a tree from the same species.

A bit of staining and/or bleaching before re-finishing can usually get a good match going.

It is a good deal! I am going to pick up a 1" extension for the rifle as I am 6' 200 lb and the stock is a wee bit short for me. I think they are 7 or 8 bucks for the pad. I may even strip the stock and use it for refinishing practice (this will be my Czech surplus beater rifle while the nice Yugo gets the Nork Silverbox).

I bought a chinese sks from lever for $139 almost a year ago. Its been fine and for that price everybody should have one. It has the shortened barrel. I put a spike bayonet on it, I just had to cut off the last 2 inches off the bayo and resharpen it. It fits just fine. Lever has a new shipment in now though, they might actually be the longer barreled versions but I don't know for sure. Check into that.

Wholly crap, that looks awesome!

I want to do that with mine. How do I get started?

I also have a $135 Lever SKS, one with a pinned barrel, no spike etc. Oh well, its never failed and you can't beat the price.
