Before I go ahead with a project (I don`t want to hear about it LOL) how long is the barrel of an SKS when the front sight is removed ?

And just wondering, what is the barrel length with the front sight on, as I get 20.5 (+/- .125) when I shove a cleaning rod down the muzzle and it touches a closed bolt.Is this how to measure the BB length of an SKS ?

Thanks folks.

The front sight slides on over the barrel, removing the front sight won't change the barrel length.
There is a cross pin that needs to be driven out, just above the bayonet mount area and then the front sight can be driven or better yet
pulled off with a puller tool.

OK gentleman ,pop the two pins and remove sight ( an SOB to be expected ,but I have the inclination and tools ,so that`s good)

But is my barrel measurement correct @ 20.5 +/- from the closed bolt ???

Ahh yes, I see the barrel is tapered now upon further investigation (or at least I assume it is) and see the grooves and lands....duhhhhh ! LOL so the length stays the same.

Thanks

Unless your going to cut the front sight ...in half, you'll have to put the barrel in a lathe to set the shoulder back , where the sight slips over the barrel. I've done some, with the sight assemble cut in half , they look good. Just remember to drill a new hole for the pin that hold the sight on...I can tell ya, with out the pin, they'll stay on for awhile....but..you know :) , when it does come off, it'll ruin the sight assembly.

I hear you ! Probably won`t go that route ,I think.

Before anything ,I need another SKS (BBQ paint special will do) and go from there.Off all the ones I have ,none are beaters and the ones I thought were beaters ended up being very nice and good shooters.

Cheers
