What is youre opinion on the unchromed Russian SKS rifles barrel life if cleaned properly of the corrosive ammo everytime you shot it?

Im asking because Ive heard 2000 rounds through a commercial rifle is perdy much it for them.

Would 2,000 rds kill a Russian, or 10,000 rds?... or more?

What else could the rifle be chambered for if the throat of the sks rifling has eroded and could be rechambered to shoot a common round?

its an SKS.. not a precission instrument.... its not ment to be, and never will be a tack driver... if your hitting what your aiming at, shoot the thing till the barrel is smooth.. then go buy another one... a 2nd sks would be cheaper then a rechambering lol, then shoot the 1st sks with the 2nd

I'm not sure, but it's way more than 2000 rds.

I'm sure you could get 10+ cases of ammo, easily, through an SKS. I wouldn't be surprised if you could get twice that.

Quite honestly, I have never heard of a worn out chrome-lined SKS... and no, 2000 is not its limit, not even close if properly cleaned and maintained.

I shot many times that through my 10/22. A precision rifle can be considered shot out after less than 2000 rounds. I'd say for general purposes your average rifle can shoot 10,000 rounds if maintained properly.

I'd say at least 20,000 before the chrome is gone and the gun shoots 15 MOA.

What else could the rifle be chambered for if the throat of the sks rifling has eroded and could be rechambered to shoot a common round!

That is preposterous. A SKS costs $200. And, althought it may have been done somewhere, I don't know of anybody rechambering a SKS for another round. That would be pretty bubba.

As previously said, when your first SKS is shot out buy a new SKS and shoot the first one with it. Or make a wall hanger. Or keep it for parts.

you can get alot of round in a gun before the barrel is smooth or not usable even with corrosive ammo

ive seen it my no 4 mk 1 was smooth all the way down the barrel i got a new barrel for it

you should be about to get 10,000's of rounds before its no good

I would say for an unchromed more then 30 000 rds. I think here's a fellow gun nutz that must have like 50 000+ rds from a non restricted cz 858, non chrome bore, someone will correct me if i'm wrong:p On a chromed bore, you will die before you wear it out!

That depends on the cartridge. Some are real barrel burners, like the .243 Win or 22-250. Some are easy on barrels, like .22LR. Considering that 7.62x39 is not a major over-bore cartridge and runs moderate velocities it should last for many thousands of rounds.

When you here of a worn out barrel on a precision rifle, it means the groups are opening up. I think you could shoot an sks till the cows come home before noticing a half minute change in the accuracy of the rifle.:)

A .308 target rifle can still be competitive at 7500-10000 rounds. For non-competitive shooting, the barrel would be good for many more.
As a barrel wears, it is the throat that erodes; the leade gets longer and rougher.
The only possible rechambering for a 7.62x39 that would recut the throat a bit would be 7.62x45 Czech. No worry about shooting out a barrel in that caliber; the supply of ammunition is very limited.
Anyway, don't worry about wearing out the barrel of an SKS. And as mentionned, if it eventually shoots too poorly to use, replace the rifle.

2000 rounds you shoot at fascist each day. When gun stops to shot, pick up fascist rifle and keep shooting

Lots of speculation, so won't continue to do so. I have an SKS I bought in 1990. Been having gravel pit fun since. Still shoots good. Rough guess on rounds: between 15-20 cases. I only had one SKS rifle til a few years ago, I shot about a cease per year since, give or take....

A rifle with a carbon steel barrel firing a mild cartridge like the SKS, with non-corrosive ammo, would fire more than 20,000 rounds before losing it's accuracy to any serious extent. How the corrosive ammo and the chromed barrel affect the situation I have no idea...
