I want to thread the end of my Norc SKS for a threaded flash-hider, but want to do it on the lathe.

How hard is it to remove the barrel for this job? Assuming I can do it myself, should replacing be done by a smith to ensure proper head space?

If it is a pressed and pinned barrel, good luck with that (buddy bent his 1/2" extension trying to press out the barrel from my Nork. With a 20 ton press it did not budge). If it is threaded shank, carefully put the reciever in a vise and screw it out.

With the stub of the SKS barrel still left in the reciever it makes it harder to press my modified pristine No. 1MKIII Enfield barrel into the receiver.

You have to remove the gas system pushrod housing from the barrel to turn it out. Removal of the housing takes a bit of ingenuity. The barrel turns out easily after the housing is moved forward.

Is the spindle big enough to just leave it together and have the reciever in the spindle?

I have heard of many SKS's getting barrel damage from difficult removals. For my flash hider I opted for a press fit and twist unit. Push it on and twist. It locks to the back of the sight and cleaning rod ( I don't use my rod as it is plenty snug) I haven't put it on in a long time but a similar post reminded I had one.
