The bayonet that are on what appears to be most of the SKSs that are kicking around, are they reproductions or original gear? Mine and many others I have seen, seems like it is a rather cheaply made cast reproduction.

Do you talk about the blade on russian sks or the spike on the chinese? Bayonet are machined but quality can vary. On a russian refurb, they might have been blasted during refurb and that can explain the rough finish they may exhibit but on all my russians, they are nicely done. Chinese ones vary from one to the next. I have a chinese, military, i bought like 18 years ago and the bayonet handle is not as nice as on my russians ones. They are mass produced military rifles so quality may differ, somes are nicer than others.

It's a blade on a Russian model. The finish isn't bad and it looks okay, it just feels like it is either cast or low quality metal or aluminum, the blade portion anyways. I don't think that it could withstand much sideways pressure and would probably break easily. Not that I intend to go around bayoneting things, but if I were to stab it into the ground I'm pretty sure that the weight of the rifle would be enough to break it if I were to leave it standing like that.

Its good steel dont worry, not cast. You can bayonet the ground as much as you want, wont break,i tested mine severals times just to see. Stabbing ground, barn wall, its strong enough for bayonet use unless you want to stab a tankLaugh2

I wonder how many times a bayonet has actually been used effectively in combat.

There must be a stat somewhere regarding confirmed bayonet kills during different conflicts.

Just as an example, the British used bayonets in 2004 in Iraq.

The story goes that British soldiers were ambushed by Mahdi militiamen and a firefight ensued. When the British ran low/out of ammo, the decision was made to fix bayonets for a direct assault. According to the story (found in the Book of the AR-15 - 2010 issue - Bayonet: Asset or Anachronism I think - can't find my copy right now :D ) the British charged the Mahdi position and routed the Mahdi, sending 35 Mahdi on a one-way ticket to Allah, while suffering only 3 wounded.

When going through Army ROTC summer camp in the early 1970's we had bayonet training. The instructor gave us this piece of advise "If you have to use a bayonet on the end of your rifle as a weapon, YOU SCREWED UP REALLY BAD!" As for the story of the Brits in Iraq, who would be afraid of a bayonet on the end of a L85A1? And the Brits did make a big mistake in not having enough ammo!

More accurately - you're service battalion screwed up really bad.

Seriously though - I'd take a long, thick tree branch over an empty rifle. I'd take a rifle with a bayonet over a long, thick tree branch.

What's better - an awkwardly weighted club or a reasonably ergonomic spear?

I have a Russian refurb, and the bayo is not nearly "battle ready" I could tell just by looking at it. Its light, and feels like it has a large aluminum content..

I can bend it by hand, fairly easily. To test it, knowing it sucked, I jabbed it into a tire at the area I was shooting at. It bent. I bent it back by hand. What a pos.

It would bend if it hit anything other then soft squishy body..
I'm removing mine.
The spike on the Chinese one I have seems more able to withstand bending forces, I think because its shape is stronger in cross section.

Canucks didn't have that problem to deal with in Korea, Our boys never turned their backs to the enemy....just held the high ground :D

testify!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would rather have 1 Canadian at my back then 15 americans, far less likely to be shot in the back and still have some one to share the ride home with
