I plan to use my SKS (which will be fitted with a Tapco stock, as I prefer pistol grips such as found on the AK's) as a short range deer rifle. I don't need or want the bayonet on it. I've had nothing but trouble getting the darned thing off. I noticed that the bayonet screw seems to be peened in on the reverse side. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, how did you solve it?

use a very large flat tip screw drives that fits snuggly in the screw head and turn hard while pushing down.

I removed mine for the first time yesterday so I think I know what your problem is. The screw stays put even after unscrewing it all the way, that's because it's still under spring pressure from the piece covering the base of the bayonet.

You have to pull that piece away (as if you were unlocking the lug to extend the bayonet) and hold it, the screw should come right out if it's already out of thread.

Just be careful, I've seen a bayo fly right out and land in a kitchen table, which was a good 5ft away.

Well, it wasn't quite 5 ft .

I finally got the screw loose by using a drill with a screwdriver bit. I guess the Russians didn't want the soldiers losing their bayonets;).

I've ordered a SKS Tapco stock from Fab Sports. Anything I need to know about fitting it?? I would like to know how to get the handguard off the gas tube to replace it with the Tapco part.
