I want to make an sks bayo into a knife and I'm curious if anyone knows the quality of steel. How does it compare to spring or tool quality steel. Someone must have done this before.

I dont think the steel is suitable for making a knife. I'm not even sure if it will take an edge well, it seems like it might break off in a person if you bayonetted them.

I highly doubt a Russian battle rifle came equipped with a flimsy bayonet that "probably wouldn't work anyways". Brass stacker makes handles for SKS and Mosin bayonets. It might take a decent edge but would probably need frequent sharpening. Bayonets are not designed or supposed to be sharpened because a sharp edge has a tendency to get stuck in ribs where a very dull, rounded edge will pull out easier. For this reason bayonets are not made in the same fashion as knives.

I seen a vid of a guy stabbing a cinder block with a mosin bayo. It broke the brick and bent the bayo badly. They're prob soft and designed to bend before break. They also wouldn't hold an edge well if that's the case... The more I thin about it it would prob make a lot better spear than knife. It's the right shape too.

Emmm a russian made sks with a flimsy bayonet? Nope that doesn't equate buddy... But it's for spearing not for cutting. So knife, probably not the best idea.
