Sks bayonets

they don't look at all like plastic and no they should never be sharpened. Anyone that tells you different is wrong. if i went to look at a sks for sale and its bayonet was sharp i would not buy it because the owner obviously has no idea how to care for guns. sharpening a sks bayonet is retarded

In any case, bottom line is that it's the OP's gun and he can do whatever he wants with it as long as it doesn't endanger others around him and a sharpened bayo is only likely to injure him, so it's a non-issue.

Always figured the flat end on the spike was meant to double as a screw driver.:)

Grizz

I think there's nothing wrong with sharpening the bayonet. It's sharp on AK for instance. The bayonet made blunt on SKS just as a sefety measure - you don't want to have sharp bayonet when you clean your gun in the field or need to use a rod in stressful situation or just carry SKS everywhere you go.

Wow what a great variety of opinions. I guess the guy was right when he said, "Opinions are like #######s, everyone has one and everyone thinks the other guy's stinks". I guess it boils down to how we individually see a particular rifle. To me the SKS is like a a "dime a dozen", inexpensive toy to be tinkered with and altered in anyway the owner wishes, or not, while others obviously see the SKS as an investment and/or the holy grail. Not unlike all those Lee Enfields that were cut down as sporting rifles. Hey, I respect all opinions, but please let's not talk about how a shiny bayonet will prevent me from sneaking up on anyone or how a sharpened bayonet might get hung up on someone's ribs. Who amongst us really has to worry about that? I know I don't. Do your really think there will be a zombi invasion or whatever and you'll need your SKS to save the world? But hey, let's keep this treat going. There's lots of opinions out there so lets hear them all. I especially like the comments for the ignorant/rude cowards who hide behind the anonymity of the forum.

To each their own. Outa the box, refinished, tacticooled or otherwise. Remember to play safe and you are your own SKS control board.:dancingbanana:( go to green is new red and see where I am going at).

Saw it, loved it! The farmers in my family are true JD people who will really get a kick out of your creation.

What is the quality of the blades on a Russian sks bayo? Personally mine will remain unmolested, but I could see sharpening one and putting a proper handle on it to use as a camp knife if I ever took it off of my rifle.

Ding ding ding. The under folding AK bayonets (Chinese) are not sharpened either. The detachable bayonets are designed to function as field knives as well. I was under the impression the the M91/30 bayonets were meant to be used as a screwdriver as well... That said, neither the Chinese pigsticker bayonets or Mosin Nagant bayonets could be used for anything BUT thrusting...

My 2 cents here. I have no problem with people sharpening their bayonet. But. As an X army gun plumber, I know it was a chargable offence to sharpen your bayonet. In wartime, I think that would go by the wayside but standard issue is dull.

dull is good...
but if you like it sharp, you like it sharp, who cares! (lots of custom cars/bikes out there)
...though you did lessen value on gun
(again who cares, just made a cheaper shooter available to the rest of us, while increasing value on my stock ones))
...if you really want to fix, just get another bayonet (should be lots left over from all the tacticool convertions out there!)

..if all those enfields weren't sporterized, then the full stock vertions would not be so high priced today
they were sporterized for one reason...SO PEOPLE COULD/WOULD USE THEM!
...so buy an sks and put it away, buy another to play with and enjoy

bayonets are dull this is how they should be left to me its not about the price its about preserving history.

the sks is not outdated as a combat weapon the 7.62x39 has not gotten any less deadly 10rd(or 5 here) that can be reloaded easy enough with stripper clips

firearms are not like cars car can be hacked up and with enough grinding and welding it can be put back together try that with any firearm

"...I polished and sharpened both..." Whatever for? Bayonets are usually more dangerous to the guy next to the guy with one fixed than they are to the guy. Bayonets are for parades.
"...Blame it on my training..." Had much bayonet training, have you? The CF has done any since at least W.W. II.
"...would be far more popular a choice if..." Not likely. Afghan tribesmen grow up using rifles. An SKS wouldn't be accurate enough for them.

I like the old battle rifles ,Enfields.Mosins,Garands, they out range (effective- accurate) the SKS/AK ammo by 2 or 3 times
Read a story about a Old Taliban killed 2 Brit soldiers with an old SMLE .303 from far away.
