A few weeks ago I went into my local Canadian Tire and noticed they had a bunch of SKS's for sale + crates of 7.62x39 all at decent prices. I returned today and noticed the rifles were all gone. Talking to the guy who works the section, he said head office ordered a 'stop-sell' for them, and had heard from someone who knows someone that the reason was because the Ministry was considering making them 'prohibited because they can easily be converted into an assault rifle'.

WTF.

Now, I'm not one to believe rumour, innuendo nor insinuation until backed up by concrete facts. But this one really ruffled my feathers.

So, is there anyone out there in the CGN world that can shed some light on this? Hopefully even quash it? I need facts not more rumours or personal opinions. I'm not looking to open up the forum for debate about whether it is right or wrong to even suggest making this rifle prohibited. I'm pretty sure I know everyone's side on it seeing as we are all gun nutz.

Cheers

there is thread that discuss about this issue

http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1136442-possible-heads-up-for-sks-owners

short version
Someone bought SKS from Canada Tire without clean it, then cause slamfire with SKS at gun range, and for some reason RCMP get involved about it. He told RCMP that he bought from Canada Tire, and RCMP decide to inspect Canada tire to see how it happen.

Last time I hear, it is resolved and SKS will go back to shelves with documents to explain that it is required to clean SKS before use it.

Ummmmm, no.

There have been two rumours:

1) Someone bought an SKS from CT that had an unpinned magazine.

2) While at the range someone who bought an SKS from CT had it go "full auto". Sounds more like a slam fire may have occured.

Either way CT head office, who were "uncomfortable" with selling anything but "traditional looking" hunting firearms took the opportunity to issue the stop-sell order.

This is ONLY at CT stores.

Not just the SKS but any firearm can slam fire if not properly cleaned/maintained.

It's not the gun fault, it's the user.

SO I don't know why RCMP will prohibit these for that

Probably another behind the counter story....

Two thoughts:

1. SKS, just like any firearm, can be easily converted into an assault rifle. It must be really really easy because journalists and politicians with zero firearms experience do it daily.

2. This whole thing was probably started by someone with a warehouse full of SKS's. They thought that if they spread the rumour they will be banned, they will sell them like hot cakes.

I believe in this scenario, the authority on this issue must be consulted. Somebody please get a hold of Mike from Canmore to see what the status is with all his SkS.
