Ok well I recieved my SKS rifle last week from SIR and basically extremely fed up with how everything turned out with dealing them. Nothing on the rifle even matches and the stock was in the worst shape I have ever seen. so I decided to do whatever I want with the rifle. I ended up sanding down the stock and restaining it, I repainted the hinge floor plate, and butt plate.

Now the question I have is the bolt, Its been painted black, but most of the paint has been scrapped off anyways, so I was wondering whats the safest way to remove the paint and just be left with a non-painted metal bolt, will it look like just the other SKS bolts?

I stripped the horrible black paint off of my (Lever Arms) 1950 Tula's bolt and carrier by using Circa 1850 heavy body paint and finish remover. The stuff is messy as hell, but it does the job. It strips off all the paint, and leaves you with dull grey metal. I then used my Dremel buffer with polishing compound, and it turned out pretty good. It is not as shiny as the one on my non-refurbed 1954 Tula, but it looks a lot better than it did with the crummy black coating.
 
I stripped the paint off one of my bolts by softening it with brake cleaner then brushing it off with a 4" steel wire wheel mounted in my drill press. It left a good looking brushed finish, not quite polished.
 
thanks guys I grabbed some circa 1850 paint stripper from walmart last night and in about 25 minutes it had all the paint right off, you you were right it was messy as hell, but it worked.

last night I noticed the stain isnt really taking to the wood well, which doesnt make any sense, cause I stain stuff all the time and I never had any end results like this before, im thinking about just sanding it down again, and just painting it flat black now, have any of you guys painted any wooden stocks before? if so any tips?
 
Used the same paint stripper (CA 1850) on your stock to remove all the previous stains on it. You can sand it down if needed when you are done. Then use the stain of your choice. I'd stain rather than paint. There are many good threads on refinishing your stock with pictures to boot. Good luck!
 
If you are looking to remove ALL the finish from your stock, use Acetone and very fine steel wool. This will remove everything and leave you with bare wood. I did this with my Mosin 91/30 and M44, and then I used Minwax Red Mahagony stain to "redden" it up a bit. Finally, I sealed it all with about 4 coats of Truoil...this stuff gives a nice shiny, durable "military surplus" finish.

This my method as well.

It took 15 minutes to get from black to this.
