i tried using my sks bore sighter today with crappy results. please tell what i did wrong here...i inserted bore sighter and then pointed it at the 25 meter target, i moved my red dot sight to where the laser was shining. i then threw a round and fired and wasnt even hitting the paper at ALL. i retried it a few times and finally gave up and just did it the old fashiond way

i think they use a measurement device these days something measures from center of bore to center of optic and then make sure it is the same reading thru the sight.... lasers can be out and so can the optic so you have to eliminate one or the other...

starting at 25 yards is a great place to start an easy way to get on target is to bring a large piece of cardboard for a backing use a sight vice or whatever lead sled you have to make sure the gun is stable fire your shots do a grouping of 3 shots. always aim at the same point for your groupings ( bulls eye ) after you have your grouping with the rifle in the vice still aiming at the center of bulls eye. now adjust your sight until it is in the center of your grouping. then just repeat these steps at the desired distance (ie: 100m)

To add to the above, I have the cheapo Bushnell boresighter, the one where you stuff it in the end of the barrel with different adapters for calibre.

What you need to do with this is hold the rifle stationary (I use my cleaning rig), and then spin the boresighter with your hand. You'll see the laser dot make a small circle on the wall (or target in your case). Set your sight/scope for the middle of that and you'll be very close.

Set your sight 2 inches above the laser, then test @ 25 yds, you will be on paper to make further adjustments.

I bought a laser bore-sighter once, money well wasted.
If you notice, you can rotate the laser and the dot will move several inches in different directions. Garbage.

set up in a vice get on paper with iron sights then without moving the rifle mount your optic and start from there. using the 3 shot grouping method works well to dial it in

here is a ballistic chart for 7.62 x 39

see how at 25 and 200 yards the paths cross the same line of sight.
and then if you zero at 25 you should be on paper and close to on target with it at 200. and 3 inches high at 100
